An observation on sun tolerant hostas

I created a bed for sun tolerant hostas last year and filled it with some well known sun loving hostas:

Liberty, Sagae, Queen Josephine, Marilyn and Snow Mouse. All of them burned at some level (mild to bad). They had to be covered, protected, from the sun. This year they came back beautiful. This year the ones I added, Brother Stephen, El Niño and Tattoo also burned but the second flush of leaves came out nicely.

Here is the second flush of leaves which have adapted to my yard conditions.

My Brother Stephan is next to daylilies so it and Liberty, Lakeside Prophecy and Fat Cat are doing well without burnt leaves. Rainbow's End on the other hand has been fried to a crisp early in the season. I have two of them planted next to each other from different nurseries--same problem with both, I am ready to pitch it out.

El Niño with some burn. There is a sign giving it shade. Here’s the new leaves

Hopefully they will be fine next year——no burn! Just seems to be the pattern in my yard.

I have a lot of varieties in full sun- some intentionally and others inadvertent due to losing a tree.

I find that if I can keep them watered really well they hold up OK- until August anyway. Lots of mine start to get ratty looking in the extreme heat this time of year.

besides us.. who is looking at hosta in august ... there is a reason all the hosta shows are in june ...

anyway.. heat .. sun and water tolerance is a function of a well established clump ... and at 2 years.. these arent.. so it not all that surprising ...

and of course.. ma nature has been a witch this season.. so what can you do about it.. other than bitch ...

lastly.. new leaves come out accustomed to the weather as it is when they emerge.. so they should look good the rest of the year .. if they didnt releaf.. they would be in summer dormancy.. and that isnt good at root growing time ...

after a week of high heat and humidity ... it fell into the 50s last night.. it feels like a fall day out there today ... i can dream it will lasts .... but we all know it wont ... oh well

Interesting miles, my RE is in mostly shade, maybe some filtered sun, but does well in this light. On the otherhand my Pocket Full of sunshine fries this time every year even though it’s in complete shade……oh well……….what are we to do?

Debra, I will have to look at my PFOS since it's in quite a bit of sun and see how it's doing.--that's interesting that yours fries every year.

Debra, the 'burned out' areas in 4 of the leaves are reminiscent of foliar nematodes....

Does this spread to the other hostas? I don’t know much about follar nematodes…..should I toss it? It does this every year……to be honest, I can think of other hostas to put there!

Pieter, just read about FN and I will dig this one out tomorrow!!! Thank you so much for the heads up. I will check my garden for any other similar looking hostas.
