should I plant cotoneaster between pool and yard/patio? Zone 6b

It has been suggested that I plant cotoneaster ( I assume the low growing groundcover variety) in a border bed that is separating our pool from the patio/yard. Cotoneaster seems so...harsh, for lack of a better word, so I am wondering if anyone can suggest something else to plant with it to soften it up. I thought about planting something like black eyed susans with it, but I don't know how those would look together, Maybe another option entirely? The bed is about three feet deep - and will receive a lot of sun, but not late afternoon sun. It is open on one side to the pool, and to the yard on the other. Privacy is not a worry or need for this area.

thank you!
