Good choice and good job! They should take off. i planted one smaller than yours a few years ago and it is now four feet tall and wide. Mine is in deep shade of spruce and maples. You may hsve better conditions to offer.

Thank you, kitasei2, good to know they’ll take off after a season or two. Mine are definitely in full shade, but they do get some morning sun and then a small bit of dappling at other times during the day. I worry it won’t be enough sun, but hope springs eternal for these shady areas under trees! (a sugar maple and several giant cottonwoods for me).

Mine's in considerable shade, but does get a couple hrs afternoon sun. A couple yrs ago in fall at 12 yrs old.

Thanks for the lovely photos, bengz6 and tsuga! Quick question, how much water do these typically need? I tend to over-water rather than under, so I don’t want to kill them with kindness. Been trying to keep the soil evenly moist, but not sopping wet, and some of the leaves are yellowing. But it seems like it’s the old sun-burned growth, not the new lighter green growth. Using a moisture meter and my index finger as a gauge.

Forget the meter. I only watered mine when the rootball felt dry 4-6 inches deep.

Do moisture meters not work? I confess, I don’t like getting dirt under my fingernails.

Meters are notoriously inaccurate.
