I would start gently. Gloves. A chisel and a hammer. See how that works first. Much will depend on the bond of the mortar with the brick. You might have to get more or less aggressive with time and experience. Others?????

Years ago, my neighbors had a brick planter inside their house removed. I took the brick for garden edging. For most bricks, a chisel and hammer worked quite well, and most of the mortar came off with one strike. Some bricks held onto the mortar much, much harder. I don't remember damaging a single brick doing this, but some still had some mortar attached when I used them.
