Art over Consoles

Everything I read indicates that art is only supposed to be 6 inches or so over a couch or piece of furniture. I'm trying to understand that rationale and why not eye level, especially when I have high ceilings. A high backed velvet eventually got here instead. Why are things supposed to be low? 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s all about “proportions and balance”. You need larger art above heavy (but pretty) console. Or use a group of 8 or more gallery arrangement.

That painting is pretty huge! I had it made for that spot because the hall was so bleak. But the red velvet couch might look better. I just don’t get why you want things below eye level

I put this together for you. The art needs to be taller. Just for scale and texture I put a carved wood horse. Then a stack of neutral books. With a lot of color in art, you don’t need more than your lamp to repeat the color here. You can add blue trim on a pillow or some small blue box. The taller art balances the strong bulk of the console. The center of art is usually hung at about 60-63” above floor. That is roughly “eye” level.

    Can you see the difference?

I do but my friend painted that 2 foot rendering of my house and I need to make it work

Maybe it would work better in another location? Would it work over a sofa? Entry?

That is the entry and I have all windows 😂

Haha. OK. Here is another possibility. Get your friend to make another one that extends the view and creates overall larger footprint. The colors and overall piece are beautiful you just need an overall larger piece. If this isn’t feasible, perhaps a frame that adds height. It’s tough.

Excuse the dog but does this work better than the console ?

    Will this help?

I don't think the couch will work. I would put the picture back at the height you had it, and then find a rectangular planter to put under it to fill in the space. Your choice whether to actually put a plant in it.

Haha. So cute!! Beautiful settee. I don’t think so. I have another idea. Get an art light to put over art to give it some larger presence. Still have to lower the art a little bit but this could help “make it work” and impress your friend? I still recommend removing the accessories And doing larger piece on right with stack of books in center as I showed earlier. Don’t have time right now to do the total mock up. Hope this helps. 😊

I chose a black one to go with light fixture. I prefer a gold one though.

IMO yes the art is too small in scale. In order to get the console and the art to be integrated more, I also like the idea of adding something to the console that is higher and wider so the console and art connect. A long basket placed under the art that has say three plants will bring height and connect the art and console. Concept below.

Thanks all! I like the art light idea
