What will you be buying for next year?

I know none of us will ever buy another rose, how could we, we have no room.
But, somehow ordering season comes around and something just comes over you/me and we are drawn to the dark side of overindulgence once again, buying roses that we have absolutely no place for and eying suspiciously any poor rose that had the misfortune to have had mediocre year.
So, be honest, what is that I still must have rose ?
For me
Chartreuse de Parme, if I can locate it
1812 Rose
Ace of Hearts
Schwartz Madonna ? Maybe
Crazy fashion
It will also depend on any new offerings from Palatine
What are your temptations for next year ?

We should support each other and turn this thread into " What will you NOT be buying for next year ?

How can I order only two roses from ARE and not get Star of the Republic -although how could I get it , and not get a few other exceptional roses ARE has. HELP ! There is no end ...

I heard Papa Meilland has out of this world fragrance.

berrypie, it is an ongoing challenge not to buy everything that we see a fabulous picture of.

I am still thinking of a fabulous orange, maybe Double Easy Orange.

I'm beginning to wish for a locals rose group so I could visit and enjoy roses in others' gardens...ones that I don't have room for. I guess that's what the local public garden is for!😅

@librarian_gardner_8b_pnw That would be nice, but nobody around here grows the roses I'm interested in 😭 At least not that I can see, and I absolutely scope out everyone's gardens and landscaping as I walk my dog. Everything is basically the same (knockouts, anyone?), the occasional half-HT-half-Dr.Huey, with the exception of just a few I can think of. The one time I was actually brave enough to ask someone about their fabulous rose, they had no idea what it was as they didn't plant it, and they didn't like it because it's a once bloomer. Seems to be the general sentiment around here. And my local public rose garden is NOT labeled, as I've complained about so many times on here. Grumble grumble. More trial and error is in my future.

For those of you who are looking to order from K&M Roses.... I have an update on them. One of the ladies from the Rose Chat group on Facebook is really good friends with Jim, and she just let me know he's going to be back up and running eventually, but it's going to be tough. He lost ALL of his rootstock in the floods last yr. But she had sent him 200 pieces of Fortuniana rootstock via UC Davis last fall to help him out. She lives in CA, but she loves Fortuniana and wants to get as many of her roses converted over to it as possible. I guess the stems he rooted in the fall have produced enough to start grafting again. Only problem is he apparently has orders for like 20,000 roses, and it's going to take some time!! I hope he hires someone to help him. He was doing all this by himself because of Covid, and his wife's declining health. Anyway, good news as far as we're concerned. He will do the best he can I guess to fill whatever orders he can in the coming season.

Beth, thank you so much for the update. Talk about a kind and generous man with a multitude of challenges.

Even one of the issues that he has faced would lay most people low.

I echo what Kristine said. 💛

Magpie, the HT section of our rose garden is perfectly labeled with big metal signs but the OGR and Tea section is hit or miss...if I lucky, I can crawl into the plant and find a plastic label. It sounds like it's better than what you have but still not ideal.

I don't understand why people complain about once blooming roses but they'll plant azaleas and rhododendrons and lilacs that all seem to have a shorter blooming season than many OGR.

We rose people are as rare as the roses we love.

Kristine LeGault 8a pnw thanked User

Librarian, I’ve never understood either. I would never not have lilacs and I would never not have my once blooming roses.

Yikes. That was a LOT of double negatives… but you get my point :)

@librarian_gardner_8b_pnw Hm, to be fair there is only one section of the rose garden that has any labeling, and the labels are very hard to find. There's a Constance Spry (the best one in that area), a Jude the Obscure (pathetic), a Mme. Hardy (also pathetic, sadly) and a few other David Austins that are just so wimpy I can't even muster pity for them or remember the names. It's a full sun area that is irrigated and all that, I don't know why they are doing so badly when plenty of other roses in the public garden do just fine.

I need some kind of markers to identify the rose that I photograph because some look so similar

Kristine, I have similar problem so I always shoot my roses with some background, a neighbor rose, part of the paver, or even the irrigation pipe pattern. LOL. If that's impossible, I will take one closeup and another one with something for me to identify.

Kristine LeGault 8a pnw thanked Feiy (PNWZ8b/9a)

Magpie I'd assume that Madame Hardy would like your area. How strange, indeed. I wonder if they prune it harshly, which it wouldn't like.

Love the double negatives, Oursteelers. I feel the same about my ornamental Cherry trees as well.

Kristine LeGault 8a pnw thanked librarian_gardner_8b_pnw

Oursteelers - but to be fair...if there were lilacs that repeat bloomed and smelled/looked just as wonderful...I'd go for the repeat bloomer. :) :)

Reading the original post, I realized that my ”still must have rose” is Bobbie James. It isn’t to be found anywhere and I’ve contacted a number of nurseries (RU - which also has a six plant minimum, Heirloom, Burling, Angel, of course none of the bigger commercial firms have it). I would have to take out my supposedly repeat blooming Cecile Brunner to put it in, but I would do it. I only have one once bloomer right now and I’m planning on taking it out. Here, spring weather makes the performance of a once bloomer iffy, and I’m not impressed with the flower form or fragrance of this one. The year’s show can be destroyed by a storm. Fall weather is much more stable, which means repeat bloomers.

@noseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque) are you taking about Ispahan? I do get nervous about the weather thing, too. I bought a Great Maiden's Blush to put in this spring, but I'm waffling on it because I've read that if the weather isn't perfect during the bloom period, the buds don't even open and then of course the wait is long to try again. I know all once-bloomers can be spoiled by weather, but apparently that one's delicate blooms are very susceptible to damage from water or wind. Sigh. What to do? It's not too late to cancel that purchase, but then I'll wonder how it would have done if I had planted it. Hmmmm how to decide?

@Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) I didn't want to mention the name of the once-flowering rose that I plan to take out because I know it is well loved by many, and because it is a rose that is happy to grow, but yes, it is Ispahan. Those crumpled looking blooms just don't do it for me. I thought it would grow on me (no pun intended) and be a romantic addition, but nope. I will probably transplant it into another part of the garden rather than leaving it in center of the main bed. Regarding your Great Maiden's Blush, I'd say go for it. I don't regret trying Ispahan. I learned that it is not the rose for me, and now I will never again wonder "what if I had tried Ispahan?" and wonder what that fabled glorious fragrance was like (non-existent for me, but there was no way of knowing unless I grew it myself). But what if Great Maiden's Blush is fantastic for you in your climate? It is such a gorgeous rose. Go for it!

Flowers grows a magnificent Ispahan in zone 5. I've seen her photos and they are beautiful. She just told me she has purchased the new Carruth rose, Forever Amber, and is very excited about its looks. Her computer is acting up, and she can't access websites to order any roses, so she purchased the last Forever Amber they had from the Rosarium near Spokane. Diane

@noseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque) You should admit Ispahan is the one IMO, so that people can see that even a famously well-loved rose is not fool proof in all climates/conditions. I believe Great Maiden's Blush is the highest rated rose on all of HMF, yet I do see reports of people becoming disenchanted with it over time because the blooms/buds get damaged easily, and it suckers (which I have never seen admitted on any seller's website so I had no idea about until recently).

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/4667945/bobbie-james-part-3-final

We have a 10’ high and 22’ long pergola made of thick beams. Wouldn’t Bobbie James look great on it? I had settled for Cecile Brunner, but I would rather have Bobbie James, not just because of the beautiful flowers but for winter hips. A local nursery had Kiftsgate, but Bobbie is nowhere to be found. Another option could be wisteria, but I don’t want it to mess with the electrical lines up there, and I’d have to climb up there a couple times a year to prune a wisteria away from the lines (and I ain’t gettin’ any younger!).

Kristine LeGault 8a pnw thanked noseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque)

@noseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque) Personally I would pick a rose that produces hips over a wisteria, as food for animals is always a huge plus to me (and them).

berrypie7....you can actually get immuno-therapy for bees, it works, but you have to think long and hard on the pros and cons...my boys did it for severe peanut allergy and now eat peanuts everyday and love it. Just a little plug IF you are hoping for something like that.

Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) and librarian_gardner_8b_pnw I found there are several facebook groups that have allowed me to meet rose people in person...we just had a meet up at Raft Island Roses in Gig Harbor. I prefer this forum for discussions since fb tends to shuffle posts making it really hard to follow.

The message said my credit card was declined, so I called and spoke with Nicole, she was very patient despite the fact that my order only had one rose, and the shipping was more expensive than the order :) A few minutes after I spoke with Nicole, I received another email with the confirmation of the order, but the confirmation still has wording saying no guarantee of the availability, and my credit card has not been charged as of today. I assume Hortico would charge my credit card only at the time of shipping. I don't want to call and bother Nicole again for the small order, but this is the second time I called Hortico for the one rose order, and Nicole has been super patient :)
