Ingrid, I know! Everything right now is really white, and all the pink roses in the front bed are washed out at the moment, so it's very bridal indeed. In fact I'm planning to add a bunch of verbena bonariensis to this border (as soon as the heat lets up a little - IF, otherwise I'll do it in the fall) as that maintains its colour (and blooms) during the heat when everything else sort of stops to catch its breath.

Virginia, I tried to hook up the smellovision but technical limitations....! About the roses that do well in the heat for me.... actually I'm so confused! Every year it seems it's different. For example, this summer it's not so much the heat that seems to have been the issue but rather the fact that it got very warm in April, then very cold again, and then super hot very quickly.

The ones that consistently seem not to mind it are Bobbie James (as you can see), rosa banksiae, Ghislaine de Féligonde, r. roxburghii, Marie Pavie, Perle d'Or, Rose de Rescht (these are all in full sun). It's hard for me to make a judgement though because it seems also to depend on exactly precisely where the rose is in the garden (and other factors). Is there a TINY bit of shade? Is there too much wind? Is there deep soil? Are there other plants nearby? Is it at least 3 years old? Has it been pruned properly? My new rosa primula seems to be handling it well (obviously no blooms to worry about) and the fragrance is so strong all over the garden. I love it. Gentle Hermione now a large-ish plant in its 3rd year is doing well and the blooms are lasting ok but it's slightly in the shade of a hazelnut tree for part of the day, so that helps. Last year Prosperity was always in bloom and they NEVER faded in the sun, but right now I just had to deadhead the ENTIRE shrub because everything was yellow and done. My new mosses' (Salet, René d'Anjou) blooms are burnt tissue paper but they're both placed near new trees which will grow and eventually shade them so I'm a little sad but not despairing....

Anna-Lyssa, those pillars look made to have that rose tumbling over them - a perfect pairing. Not to mention the handsome iron gate. Bother, I think I'll have to investigate Bobbie James now, and that could require a whole rethink!
