A shelf between cooktop and vent hood will interfere with proper drafting when the hood is in use. Vent hoods suck up the smoke and steam which carry grease droplets. This lovely mixture will slowly cover shelf and contents with a sticky layer of film. It looks lovely but not recommended.

Hi we aren’t done with our kitchen yet but we are still doing this design. I believe we will have 12” between the vent and the shelve. I will get back to you when I do:)

I also have did this design, but with an 11" x 30" wooden shelf. I simply bored three rows of 2" holes in my shelf and the intake is uninterrupted even if put plates or bowls on the shelf.

And when it catches on fire? People do the dumbest things in the name of fashion. 😐

Picture is lovely but so impractical. All the glassware in the photo will be greasy and then dust will stick. And the cute little lamp next to the stovetop is so weird. Photos of kitchens where no one cooks.
On the other hand I love the marble backsplash slab, amazing color/pattern.

I’m copying the exact same kitchen off Pinterest for my reno. Wood Island. Crystal Quartz shelf and backsplash means we need a 3” shelf.

I hope this helps. code is shelf has to be 24” above burners. If you have a finished picture to share I’d really appreciate it. I can’t figure out how stumpy our hood fan is going to look. Hope it went well.

How high above range did you end up going, and did it obstruct vent flow?

there is code for this, Athena’s measurements posted above are the minimum code requirements for New York (24” above the burners). We did our shelf slightly less deep at these measurements. No issues with the hoodfan, no issues with grease under the shelf, above the shelf gets a bit sticky but you can wipe it down (and no one sees up there).
