Nematodes are just between veins and infected plants tend to be striped with the damage.

Interesting article, I am also having issues with brown stripes on many of my hostas. For now I have been pulling off those leaves and disposing of them.

Tj, perhaps you are right……after reading that article, I am still concerned about PFOS because there are two leaves on either side of the plant where the brown does not cross veins, at 3 & 8 o’clock. Mouse Ears at 6 o’clock has 2 veins next to each other on the 7 o’clock leaf, on Half & Half, it appears to cross the vein. So the other hosta I am concerned about is Marilyn as the brown does not cross the vein. I am going to do the test to see if I can see the nematodes. I appreciate comments and would like others opinions.

My under is that there is not much you can do about nematodes. i have had them on a plant one year and none the next its just part of the summer uggly you can pick off the affected leaves only to find more a few days.

Try this…

To diagnose foliar nematodes, first, realize that you can see them. The best way to confirm their presence is to break or cut open the leaves showing symptoms (necrosis and/ or chlorosis between the veins). Put some water on a piece of clear glass or a clear glass dinner plate (or Petri dish). Let the cut edges of the leaves stay in contact with the water for 10- 30 minutes. Then back light it (hold the glass over a lamp so the light shines through the water and leaves). You will see the very tiny nematode snaking and swimming out of the leaf tissue.

Late season signs of earlier seasonal stresses. Bacteria often occupy injured or damaged tissue. Your plants are going dormant soon. If possible, resist the urge to kill or purge a bunch of plants.

Thanks utog………. I have just removed Pocket Full of Sunshine….. I was ready to loose that one…….every year, soooo ugly for half the summer and it got lost in the bigger ones. I am more than ready to replace it with a more desired hosta…….like …..what’s your favorite? Plum or Sugar something? :-)

Debra, I am sorry that you have to have this worry.

You may be interested in the thread I had posted years ago. I was worried about my Blue Mouse Ears and wondered if it had nematodes. In the end, I dont believe it did. I still have the same BME and they are fine.

So happy to hear nhl. I did the water test, but I had no strong magnifying glass, just a minor one, but I did not see any squiggles. Thanks for the link!

I would suggest getting a good magnifying glass. One never knows when these kind of symptoms will appear again. I did, but have never had to use it! Maybe that's the key---buy it, and it never rears its head again! LOL!

I've stressed out about it a couple of years ago. I did the water and magnifying glass thing, saw nothing and let several plants stay and removed a couple. The ones that stayed are fine. I think that there's a lot of late August stress right now. My summer has been horribly hot and humid along with short intense downpours now and then. Everything is beginning to look so worn and tired. This year I don't have time to worry about it.

I will get a magnifying glass…..did the article say 10X???? I will check back to see. I appreciate everyone’s help!! :-)

Yes, 10X magnification.

as oaks said.. the plants shown are in extreme drought stress ... so a lot of stuff is 'showing' ... besides the fact it is sept in the north ... you will be lucky if you have another month regardless ...

as such... i feel its imperative.. that you water the heck out of them for the rest of the season.. so they go into winter fully hydrated ... if not.. you will find them dry rotted in spring ...

since you dont sell hosta.. i dont know why nems should bother you ... some years they show ... like this year.. and most years they dont ...

in my world.. warped as it is... throwing away perfectly good plants is just.. well... stupid ...

besides.. there is next year ...

also.. im not even sure you bother trading or sharing.. so whats the big deal ...
