Help Please: How To Tie The Two Rooms Together

last modified: 4 years ago

I appreciate the feedback from this site, so I am reaching out again ;)

My kitchen & great room are one big area. With only 900 sq. feet, my island is also my dining room table.

Right now, I need to wrap this remodel up to take care of my sick mother, so I won't have time to paint anything else from brown to white (Benjamin Moore Simply White). Unfortunately, I also cannot purchase any couches or chairs, which were my original plans. And the painting over the couch has to stay.

So now I feel like I am left with a brown heavy leather couches area and 2 barrel chairs that are creamier than the other whites. One day (hopefully next year), I will buy two new swivel chairs in some sort of upholstery material. My kitchen is grey & white. I feel like it is off balance with all the brown at the opposite end.

1. I need end tables and lamps. I would like to move the floor lamp and put some sort of console table that would also act as and end table. I would also like a couple more end tables. Not sure what color or material for end tables?

2. What color lamps?

3. Should I add more brown/grey to the kitchen area with a roman shade? I do not want to add drapes to the large picture windows because I would loose my view of Mackinac Island. Plus there are no neighbors to see in, so I am not worried about privacy.

4. Should I change my door pulls to black in the kitchen?

5. What else am I missing?

I am a minimalist, so no knick-knacks. I just want the two rooms to balance with a comfortable, neat & clean feel. I know there will be various opinions and am OK with that.

Much thanks!

your kitchen is contemporary, and the living room has a 70s MCM inspired vibe. even though I love the wood paneling, painting it white will help knock out the 70s feel and help it tie in with the kitchen better.

I absolutely love this space, but I'm afraid it's the couches and ottoman that don't belong. the barrel chairs maybe, but like you said the color is wrong. any chance you can replace all of the living room furniture?

I realize you don't have time for it now though. family first! take care of your mother, and after that's settled, consider rethinking that entire living room.

also... this is minor, but a quick change you could make right now-- that big black picture frame does not belong, and is dominating that wall. have it reframed with a smaller, simpler style, in a wood color that coordinates with your beams.

I actually don't think the wall color is a problem. Maybe you could replace the rug under the sofas as an intermediate step since you don't have time to deal with anything more substantial right now? It looks like this is an area rug. What I'm thinking of is a rug that incorporates a couple of neutral colors that will bring together the gray and the brown. Even if you eventually replace the brown sofas, you still have the stone behind the fireplace and wood around the windows which is brown. While looking at area rugs can consume a lot of time, you could try going to a carpet retailer, buying a remnant and have the edges bound. Good luck with your family issues. :-)

Cute house! Get rid of the rug and don't replace it. Get rid of the ottoman. Get rid of the kitchen rug and replace it with a colorful runner.

With the rug and ottoman gone, reposition the furniture by putting the loveseat with its back to kitchen island. Put the two white chairs in front of the window and add a table between.

Art on the wall is too large for the space. It would make a great headboard!

I asked. I will be able to order furniture in 6 months. I have to keep the picture as it was a gift from my husbands family (long story). The room has cathedral ceilings. Maybe raise the picture as there is some extra room.

Any furniture suggestions? I have not bought furniture in 20 years. We love how the barrel chairs swivel and hug your body. So I would like to incorporate 2 new swivel chairs and at least a new sofa with a built in ottoman.

Any suggestions on brands and colors. I want to custom order it, so I know there will be an extra waiting period. And what end tables???

    Thanks for the ideas.

I just meant change the frame if you can. not the picture.

as far as furniture goes, what do you like? do you have any inspiration photos? personally I'd decorate this room MCM because of the amazing fireplace and slanted ceiling, but that's not to everybody's taste.

SeattleMCM.....show me what you would do? I like MCM. The fame has a crack so it probably needs a new frame anyway.

Love your choice of olive oil! I would bring the golden yellow from the re-framed art down into the living space with a matching pair of sofas in that gorgeous color. Put them in an "L" ; one with its back to the kitchen and the other with its back to the windows. Relocate the "office" to another room, and lower the TV to about where the computer screen is.

gina, I think Beverly has it.. or in between those 2 patterns. With light background as 2 chairs/ kitchen have... and dark in there.

I like Beverly’s thought on a lighter rug. Maybe you could just raise the art over the sofa a little bit ( haha, I realize the advise is usually the opposite with art, but since it is very large , a little space so as not to be so overbearing over the sofa might not hurt ). I think your rooms tie together nicely already, however something as simple as a large vase of golden yellow flowers as an accent on the kitchen island will further the cohesion ( tall forsythia stems in the spring, sunflowers in the summer/ fall, a white manzanita branch with gold bulbs at the holidays, etc…..).

    … or a bowl of lemons ? ….

    Relatively quick and easy fixes:

    1) New lighter rug that incorporates the colors in both spaces

    2) New frame for the art.

Oh boy, if you are getting new furniture, and you like MCM, the sky's the limit!

Looking at your barstools and barn door, I think maybe you don't want to go too MCM though? Contemporary furniture that leans that way would still look great with that fireplace, while not being too funky, if you know what I mean. Check out places like Room and Board or Crate and Barrel for that kind of look.

Or if you did want to lean way more MCM, look to places like Design Within Reach, West Elm, or CB2. You don't necessarily have to buy from these places, but you can use them for inspiration.

If you love your barrel chairs, they may be worth getting reupholstered. I also like Beverly's idea to get a new rug. It will immediately upgrade how that space looks for now, and will buy you time until you're ready to get new furniture.

I think items like in the pics below would tie in with your kitchen well. You don't need to get white, but do look for lighter colors because your room seems a little dark. Like, consider grey or taupe for the couches, and a fun pop of color for the barrel chairs.

now veering a little more funky, but still "safe" choices...

I think this couch is too blocky, but I love the colors used here (and I really love the rugs):

But if you're asking how *I* personally would decorate that room? kind of like this. I think your fireplace and ceiling are really amazing and would want to pick really fun pieces to compliment it!

Yes to a new rug with a white back ground and grey accents.

I like the picture. Keep it. Maybe move it up a bit. But, don't do anything until you have the new sofa. The picture frame serves as your one piece of black in the room.

While I loath the grey mania, in your application, I would consider a grey, tailored sectional L-shaped sofa. It will give you a lot of seating and take wear and tear.

The barrel chairs can be reupholstered using a vibrant yellow gold pattern to pick up the colors in the picture. As noted above, they can be moved to in front of the windows rather than the fireplace.

Drop the level of the TV.

While these chairs do not have a pattern, the combination of the light rug, the tailored grey ottoman and yellow chairs with light brown stone gives you and idea of a good direction. Here are some additional textiles for the chairs or pillows. I think they would look really great with a tailored grey sectional sofa.

A piece of furniture doesn't really have to be associated with "grey mania". I love neutrals for the big expensive pieces because you can keep them and decorate around them for a very long time. Grey is popular, but it's also classic.

(when I think of "grey mania", I think grey walls + grey toned floors everywhere. and I agree, it's all too much.)

I agree SeattleMCM. I'm stuck in the last two centuries and I find the grey, grey, grey all the time depressing. Still, I recognize that every space has it's own personality and it's own demands. I like the idea of a large deep grey piece lifting all the brown elements and a brighter element to create the pop. The picture is the driving force. It seems to demand a yellow or goldenrod pop reflected elsewhere in the room.

The entire space reminds me of something Sarah Richardson would tackle. I think it could be fabulous with the right fabrics and good basic pieces.

I think a lighter color rug would be the easiest way to get better balance.

While I agree with Seatlle MCM about the black frame, that arwork is HUGE. Getting it reframed would be a big undertaking, and $$$, not really a quick and easy fix.

You have a beautiful place I get a whiter off white rug look or even beige would look good

I'm on low battery and and the Brown trim and the Brown couch pulls the room together real well and you have a rock fireplace I think you're doing pretty good you got light color chairs I'll look at this again later

With the view you have I feel like you are blocking it with the couch. Have you tried moving it and placing the chairs by the window? Sometimes all a room need is the furniture reworked. Think outside the box and even though you are a minimalist add some textured and a little pop of color..maybe. I always work with what I have and shop my house and move furniture out if I dont need it or pull from different rooms. Its a beautiful set up and the view is spectacular

yes of course, I just meant it would be slightly faster / easier compared to the angst of buying all new furniture. that and a new rug would make a nice difference for now, until it's time to do the rest.

gina9775 is it a painting? just remove the frame for now. who knows, you might like it better w/o one. if and when you are ready to get it reframed... this is what I suggest, in a medium brown color:

The picture is a painting. Lots of good ideas. Thank you!

The gold in ur painting would be good in a pillows for sides of couch. A green something would be really relaxing color.

A quick fix is a lighter rug, but purchase to suit the eventual look you are aiming for. I would hold back on doing anything else and start saving inspiration rooms that appeal to you (search beamed ceilings in small living rooms, for example). If it were me, I’d skip MCM.

First step is to consider best layout and pieces to take advantage of view and better tv viewing. A sectional may work well and place swivels in front of window.

When choosing seating, suggest lighter to off-set the large art, to brighten room and to better work with kitchen. Other decisions will be easier to decide on.
