or... some armchairs come in "apartment size", a little bit smaller. I have a replica Z chair, and it's so light and airy, it looks good in a tight space. plus it's easy to move around if you want to sometimes pull it out to face the TV. it's surprisingly comfortable too!

put a small side table next to it (off to the right), and that corner will be filled in nicely.

There is a lot of glare on the TV screen. Are you sure this is the best layout for this room?

Beverly - the room is really awkward so there is a possibility that we could put the TV and console in the staircase area but that's the only other option for it. There's only one place for a couch to go which is against the back wall.

It's difficult to guess how much depth you have, comfortable chairs are pretty deep and based on your one photo, would have to be angled in the corner. A bench would be great but maybe not for lounging. An alternative may be a narrow loveseat, there are some available which are about 30" deep and about 60" wide. Here's one that is very comfortable. If you go that route and can't test them personally, read reviews to make sure they're comfortable. Congrats on your new casa!

Do you mean by 'back wall' the wall opposite the stairs? It could reduce the visuals a bit by removing the lower diagonal trim of the stairs.

Try a reading lamp in the corner, an upholstered swivel chair in front of it (so it can be turned to watch the tv or to face the sofa), and a small side table. If there is extra room, you could either use two chairs with the side table between them, or put a large potted plant such as a schefflera in the corner behind the reading lamp. Hope you enjoy your new home!

If there is no lower staircase below it, you can never have too much storage or a hideaway. A dog bowl and mat, a child reading nook with a light maybe a sleeping bag, pillow, chair; shelves behind a sliding or a hidden door is intriguing.

I agree with partim layout. Less TV glare, better flow with doorway and more room by the windows for other chair that could face TV or not. Like idea of console table behind for lighting, space for books, etc, Takes up little space.

Floating the couch in the room as @partim suggested makes total sense. I’m sure you thought the couch had to be on a wall, but the opposite is true. The tv needs the big wall, sitting on a nice console with storage. And a sofa table behind the couch for lighting. Move the furniture before you call the cable company. If you don’t have furniture sliders, get athletic socks to put under the feet of the couch and slide it around. (Keep the rug rolled up and outside the room for now.) This new layout will make the room feel larger and have better flow. And better tv viewing!

Yes, I agree with Partim too. The sofa on the stair wall and a sofa table behind the sofa is the way to go. And like Jantrader said, a sofa table behind the sofa allows a place for lighting, books, and decor.

Yes. If you can at this time, replace the sofa with a smaller one to fit the space.

No, it doesn't matter. Especially since you will be pulling the sofa away from the wall, and putting a sofa table with lamp etc behind the sofa. Visually, your sofa will be floating in the room, not lined up to the staircase wall. And be sure that the current TV wall has a good-size piece of wall art on it, so that is the focus of the the room.

And there's no need to call your cable company. A wireless HDMI transmitter will throw the cable signal to your tv. One part plugs into the TV where the cable goes, and the other half of it plugs into the cable connection. Easy peasy.

I think your TV placement will work if the TV is sitting on a swivel stand on your console. I agree with the suggestion of a bench in the space you named or a light-weight, open chair, such as the Z chair; we have two of those in our living area, one is a rocker. Obviously, this style of chair is very compatible with your contemporary/modern taste. And, as mentioned in a previous post, it would not overpower the space. Your furniture choices are cool for the very traditional space.

Such a pretty room, and great furniture, even without being all arranged yet! And that's a cool ceiling light fixture. Have you considered moving the sofa so the short side of its L is under the stairs, and the rest of it faces the TV? Then you could add a couple of chairs for a separate seating area where you currently have the sofa? Whatever you do, it's not set in stone. I rearrange my furniture every so often for fun.

I'm also on board with partim. Try it out either with a tape measure and painters tape on the floor, or go for it and move the sofa. If this works, there may be room for another small chair on the other side of the radiator.

Not sure if this option will work for you and your family, but you could also put the TV on the stair wall to face the couch where it is, and reduce glare. Then move the chair or place in another room.

Consider getting a second TV console to better fill out that wall and to give yourself more storage. Note corner chairs to face a sofa.

Unless the stairs are over another stairway (such as to the basement) you could install built-in bookcases. Get a small Oriental rug, a rocking chair and reading lamp to define a "reading nook" type of space. If you don't care for Oriental rugs, just make sure the small rug you put there is very different from the big rug in the room, to identify the area as separate. If you can turn your couch so it faces away from the reading nook, that will help define it as a separate space even more.

Hi Christy! Saw your new layout. 2 questions: does it work in terms of traffic flow, and would it be better with the sofa closer to the stair wall? If people can easily pass through, this looks good from what I can tell.

I love the wall art ideas from @housegal2000. It looks Iike a sofa table can fit behind to hold lamps. Also, try moving the chair closer to the tv, facing the sofa. This layout seems much more practical and uses the space well.

I also think the console beneath the tv would serve better elsewhere: the white is too bright and the proportion too small for the space and the tv, IMHO.

Agree - def need a bigger console. I like the idea of a long wooden one and maybe hanging the TV
