This is the ceiling in one of the bedrooms on the second floor of my home. It has a drop ceiling with laths and plastic above. I wanted to install a drywall ceiling so I removed a few panels to see what it looked like underneath. The black is a grainy texture like sand or dirt and there are a few spots that look like stains from moisture. I’m not sure if there’s asbestos or black mold. Wondering if I can just install drywall over this or if the laths need to come down first. Also wondering if I should have someone come out and look to make sure it is a safe project to do, or if I should hire a professional.
