Beautiful rose. It would make some long cutting stems if that’s what you wanted. I wonder if it would work as a climber. The thorns look like those of Radio Times. Wicked. Not that that would ever stop me.

Hi Noseometer: I trained it as a climber using one big cane to bend horizontally along the brick (in a video). It responded very well as it sent our multiple lateral shoots and I got more flowers. The canes aren't too stiff so it can certainly work as a climber.

Hi Deborah: your April Love is gorgeous. I envy you because it took mine several months to see its 1st bloom. It's a great rose. I can't wait to see its potential in its 2nd year, I'll update my blog too. I wonder how tall yours will get. Enjoy.

@Roses In Houston are you still happy with your April Love? I chucked mine. It was growing like a thicket with stems at severe angles to the ground....almost like a blackberry plant. I loved the flowers and fragrance, but the shrub itself didn't grow in any pretty manner (for me).

@User I absolutely love mine. It's one of my strong summer performers this year with high heat and drought. It has produced continuously.

My April Love is still a pretty small bush -- but just had 3 more blooms. the blooms were a little bit more pale than my last post -- but still super fragrant. We've also had a recent heat wave. Love your rose, TW H!

@rosecanadian - Carol -- on the Heirloom website they mention that David Austin has nothing on this rose -- or something like that. So I think others see the resemblance, too! :-)

@DDinSB (Z10b Coastal CA) Thank you. Glad to hear you still love yours. I have noticed that its color changes slightly as well. I really love this rose as my DAs aren't blooming well at all in this heat. What I meant was many DAs dont have the cupped shape and petal counts were much lower (except a few like Spirit of Freedom that still looks great).

now that i see it could be a climber im wondering what to do with mine . mine started very vigourous and bushy so i had no idea it could get tall .

Sorry I didn’t see your question until now, Lilyfinch. Mine seems to have stunted its growth, and not achieving its early promise. So I’m contemplating putting it in a pot. How is yours?

Mine has stayed a shrub shape for now . i plnted it in a metal raised bed , i hope it does well there . its one i love !

Mine was in a pot since Feb, but just put it in the ground (front yard, more sun). I'm hoping it complements the nearby Hot Cocoa...I've seen pink roses at Otto's look great against the Hot Cocoas and Cinco de Mayos. Houston -- I'm going to go check out your video now!
