Need professional advice

Hi All,

Happy Labor Day! I could really use some advice. Our builder painted our Marvin doors black. I feel like the visible wood seams with leaked paint look terrible. What should they have done differently? Is this considered acceptable work? Short of replacing everything with pre-finished black doors, what can I ask the builder to do?

Thank you!

Take a picture of the doors from a chair location in the space the doors are in and post it.

You won't get a factory finish with an on site paintjob - but this doesn't look bad, IMO - it might way up close but not in context....

Why did "Our builder painted our Marvin doors black", when you could have bought Marvin doors painted black?

This is a good question. We have doors that will need to be stained on one side and painted on the other. What should be used to prevent stain or paint seeping through?

I think if you got a small brush and painted that inner bevel with a bit more paint it would fill in that line that now looks splotchy and uneven.

Wood that is sealed tight to the glass and properly caulked will never have paint against that glass, unless there are dribbles and caulk holidays. This comes back to incorrect expectations. If you want the inner lips against the glass to be your beauty color, you choose factory pre finished. Site finished can not do that.

Not possible when you want two different finishes and custom colors at that!!! I'll ask my painter how he plans to attack the doors without a mess like the OP has.

We should have just ordered black doors. I think our project manager was trying to cut costs for us....but we would never had done that if I’d known they’d turn out like this. Per Marvin website, these doors can be painted/stained on site any custom color. Is the leakage potentially a caulking manufacture defect....or just part of the deal with a site finish?

Stain is very thin. Wood and other materials just suck it in like a sponge. I cant think of any way to turn back the clock on this but Marvin might have some ideas.

Is the space where the leak is…in between the dual pane glass?..if so… that would definitely indicate a problem that Marvin should address

No, it is running down behind the glass stop and the IGU. Happens all the time and typically not something that is thought of until too late.

Millworkman....what could have been done differently techniquewise to avoid it? It’s not very pretty from the outside😔

Not much realistically as it happens. Just be more careful, use a paint shield or super carefully tape it off.
