Phoenix Nastertium really is a climber

I started this variety from seed indoors and transplanted it into the ground sometime in early June.

I didn't realize in advance that this variety is known to climb until I saw this in the garden:

I planted in next to a dense cedar hedge and saw this poking through:

And this flower and leaves are probably 6 feet away from the in ground "mother" plant (shown circled in orange):

That's fantastic!! It's going like crazy! I have donated funds to the Nasturtium seed people so many times over the years and never once ended up with a plant. I'll try again next year.

I love round leaves but the two that want so desperately to establish in my garden are horrible weeds, Hydrocotyle and Dichondra.

but you can do a lot better than calling that conifer a cedar ....

LOL Tiffany, I love the way you put that - "donated funds to the nasturtium seed people"!! I don't have great luck with nasturtiums either. Each year I think I'll try again but they lately have gotten cut from the seed list to put the money elsewhere.

Rouge, that's really something how far away those blooms are!

I love climbing Nasturtiums. They seem to sense shadows and grow towards other plants etc to weave through them .

I pulled out my Alaska reds and they immediately resprouted from either seeds or roots and are racing against the weather to start a second round.

I've yet to grow the Phoenix cultivar. They look wonderful.

Well, it's called phoenix for a reason. :) I totally did not get the import of donating money to nasturtium seed people till I read Diggerdee's post. I was totally wondering what people take donations for nast... seeds? ROFL! They are the easiest seeds to grow plants from (unlike say petunias, loebelia erinus or torenia, which are tiny, hard to space apart, transplant etc.). Take some most mix or soil, drop the seed, push it in 1/2 to 1" cover and they will pop up in a week max. unless there is a problem with the seeds.
