Tonight's dinner menu

A small local place that specializes in nachos and burritos (the owner is from Arizona) spent the summer remodeling the upstairs of their building, and is offering once a month special dinners by reservation only. Tonight is the first dinner, and here is the menu.

"Our 5 course menu is

- Tiradito- thinly sliced fish with grilled orange and roasted Fresno sauce. Fennel corn salad. Sweet potato chips

- Heart Chakra - beans and greens with paw paw jam

- Turtle tacos - mini fry bread tacos with crispy turtle, shrimp pasilla sauce, whole roasted jalapeño and green bean slaw

- Braised rabbit legs - in tamarind braising jus with sage roasted potatoes, caramelized carrots and pearl onions, grilled celery. Piki bread

- chocolate flan with grilled orange caramel and tamarind candy

Complimentary cocktail pairings."

I think the theme is the Tortoise and the Hare. Her food is always excellent. We are going with a friend, and taking wine (no liquor license), since we all have very low tolerance for sweet or fruity cocktails.

Shrimp/Scallop scampi on angel hair with a fresh bread. It was meant to be a boat day but the weather is too windy so we get a quick and easy meal anyway. More time to goof off on the internet.

We will be eating late tonight. Probably BLTs as there are an overabundance of tomatoes from the garden. That and some soup from a mix I picked up at an international store. I think it's from Poland.

Sushi, that looks like a wonderful, creative menu..but I couldn't bring myself to eat turtle or rabbit. Hypocritical, I know, because I eat other creatures.

I have no idea what I'll have. I cleaned the kitchen this morning after having put it off way too long and now I don't want to cook and spoil my hard work. I could put a salad together but I had that for lunch. Maybe pbj sandwich.

    Sounds fun! Enjoy it

I just ate a rare beef and pork burger, with lots and lots of chili pepper's on it, along with caramelized onion. It was a lot of calories, so I think I'm done for the day :) I didn't eat it on a gigantic bun, or add any cheese if that counts?

After just returning from 3 months in NC, we are starting our low carb eating. Grilled Pork chops and broccoli for dinner. Not very exciting!

This in a place that specializes in nachos and burritos? I think they're driving outside their lane. A shock menu. I'd think many going would do so to talk about it afterwareds, rather than being enticed by the menu items in such an odd combination.

We're having razor clams. We didn't go digging on this stormy weekend, but a friend did and dropped some off. Freshly dug and expertly cleaned for me ;0) If fried whole, DH will bread, then fry in the open garage doorway. I think I'll use a method where they are ground but not exactly made into a fritter, more like crunchy little disks with just a little cracker, egg to hold a shape, dill.

I've never eaten turtle but don't think I would. I've had rabbit, but infrequently and not for many years. Still, will look forward to your review of your dinner.

I've had turtle, once and rabbit. They fed us fried rabbit in basic training in San Antonio in 1984. I asked for the fried chicken and they corrected me. It was pretty good and I don't remember it tasting different than chicken. Years later my ex and his father tricked me into eating turtle, telling me it was pork. It was okay.

Morz8, when I was a child, our whole family - grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins - went to the ocean to dig razor clams for a week. We rented a row of little cabins and the women would can (water bath canners!) ground razor clams for us to eat all winter. Surprisingly, none of us died. I remember my mom boiled them before we could eat them - now I would think they probably were pretty rubbery. But she would make clam fritters just how you described, the clams probably more finely ground than yours, though. They were so delicious! I also have friends who dig them, clean and deliver to me once in a while. I feel very lucky when they do!

That meal sounds interesting and delicious. I hope you have a great dining experience. I think their concept of everyday lower level and once a month upper is smart and inspiring for a small business.

I was thinking about doing flat iron steaks on the grill but it's windy out there so maybe not.

I had rabbit in France. My host mother did some catering and had a rabbit out on the countr ready for the Dutch oven for a client’s event. I gave a little ”awww” of dismay, and she reminded me that we had had rabbit for dinner a few nights before.

I have never had turtle, though, I’m pretty sure of that.

That menu sounds amazing! I would love to try it! I wonder what turtle tastes like?

If they have no liquor license, how do they have cocktails? Is it because they are complimentary, not purchased?

Thin chicken cutlets breaded in panko, parmesan cheese and fresh thyme, sauteed for a crisp crust and finished in the oven; wilted spinach with garlic, shallots, toasted pine nuts and golden raisins, and a salad of romaine, fresh Bosc pear slices, dried cranberries and poppyseed dressing. I had glass of pinot grigio, and for dessert we had a pear and puff pastry tart drizzled with a glaze of lemon juice, local honey and almond essence.

As you can tell i had several pears to use.. I‘d already made pear preserves and pear sauce (similar to apple sauce) with lemon, vanilla and cardamom.

Olychick, I had a friend and neighbor much older than you who told me when a child, it was her job to stoke the outside fire under the copper pot holding crab being processed in jars. She would have to tend that fire for hours and hours. And, they all lived.

I've pressure canned clams a few times, coarsely chopped to use in winter dips and chowders but not recently.

We do enjoy the clams and should have put on raingear, gone ourselves. But, low tide was at 6:12 AM and I wasn't interested in digging by lantern. DH either ;0) Our friend dug clams at 5 AM.

And older now, DHs glasses are a problem for him. Leave them off and he can't find the holes in poor light. Put them on in the rain to get wet and spotted and he still can't see the holes....

The whole meal was amazing. Elmer, the chef is very creative and capable, and not outside her wheelhouse, She's just having fun, hopefully once a month, indulging herself. Every dish was amazing. and the cocktails were great, too. If you are not selling the booze, it is "complementary", lots of Mexican places around here serve margaritas free. I think they just whisper "tequila" over the glass. But you can give it away, just not sell it.

This was their first time, but are looking at doing this once a month. We plan to be there. I'll post the drink pairings tomorrow.

Sounds like a very interesting menu! I love tasting menus, tapas, etc. The idea of committing to a whole big plateful of somethings holds no charm for me.

I had rabbit not long ago as part of a local farm to table evening. It was good but not really the highlight of the dish. Unless one is a vegetarian, not sure why cuteness should have much to do with entree choices. Like some sort of culinary eugenics LOL.

As a native Philadelphian, of course I've had snapper soup!

I've also had kudu, bees, frog legs, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.I did not eat the fried tarantula served in little side dish at lunch on the terrace at the Four Seasons Chiang Mai. O.M.G.; they looked exactly like what they are, too.

Anyway, for dinner it was just DD2 and me. We had roasted broccoli and leftovers, tomato gallette and a baked spinach risotto. Yum.

    Sounds interesting and fun, Sushi!

I had a larger than usual lunch yesterday (grilled cheese w/turkey and spinach + Pepper jack tomato soup) so dinner was just a salad with shallots, raisins and chickpeas. Tomorrow is grocery delivery day so I am trying to use up all in my fridge.

Kswl, your pears in puff pastry look great! It is one of my fav desserts.

Very fancy! Must be a spectacular chef who just enjoys the art of cooking! And...you know the art of consumption. ☺ I'm glad you enjoyed yourself! ♥

I had: Black berries & strawberries smothered in plain greek yogurt w/ a chicken tender covered in ranch dressing on the side. My husband had a plate of chicken tenders & jo jo fries.

There are a lot of snappers around Philadelphia, the waters there are conducive to growing some big ones. My husband's boss used to have a side gig hunting snapping turtles for the Asian and restaurant markets. I would not be too enthusiastic about eating them knowing the kinds of watery places they come from, but a lot of seafood I like has a kind of gross lifestyle by human standards. I would definitely try some if offered it would be an interesting experience, but I wouldn't put it on my regular menu unless I was in dire straits. Pea soup would suit me fine.

Snapper soup is heavily spiced and kind of gloppy IME. The snapper is lost, but for texture. I don't care for it.

Here are pictures from the restaurant's FB page. The very first was a small bite of their excellent rajas tamale, toasted, topped with some green chilies and on a bed of creamy cheese. Just a bite to start out.

Inspired by the other recipe thread (and because my mother has never had it) I made zucchini butter pasta for dinner tonight, along with mushrooms stuffed with breadcrumbs, thyme, garlic garlic, lemon zest and reconstituted and chopped sun dried tomatoes topped with mozzarella. My mother loved it all and finished her entire dinner ….a rare occurrence.

Bpath, lol😎 and thanks Mtn. We have few decent restaurants here so I cook almost daily.

Tina, Bestyears started a thread sharing a similar recipe. Variations of zucchini and pasta abound— it was one of the internet favorites this summer. Apparently Julia Child developed something like this but I imagine the current iteration is something she would not recognize. Here is the thread and discussion: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6178403/a-new-favorite-recipe-to-share

and this is the recipe I use: https://smittenkitchen.com/2021/06/zucchini-butter-spaghetti/

My changes: rotini instead of spaghetti, more basil, and one thinly sliced leek that is sauteed with the zucchini.

Thank you @User. I saw Bestyear's dish and commented on it earlier. It does look good. I'll look at your link.
