In the second and third photos, you can see through the gap that the freezer door hinge is above the panel. If the gap width were zero, the hinge would be blocked and you wouldn't be able to open the door. What happens to the width of the gap between the door and the side panel as you slowly open the door. Isn't it reduced? The thick door and its panel need clearance between them and the side panel to allow the door to open. I don't know how the installation could be made any better IMO; all the gaps around the doors and panel above are uniform, optimizing the appearance.
