Paint or replace cabinets?

last modified: 3 years ago

A year later and I finally got photos of my new kitchen. Thanks everyone for your thoughts - changing the floors was out of the question, but we made a swap to counters, cabinets, backsplash and wall color that I think make a huge difference. Showing it off here because I'm pretty pleased with the results. :)

I'm thinking about having my cabinets painted while the painters are here doing the house. My realtor insists I'm going to hate painted cabinets and that they're pretty expensive (to do well), so I could buy new ones without doubling the cost.

I keep thinking, all the photos I'm seeing of colored kitchens in magazines MUST have been painted, right? Does the paint immediately start to wear? Can you tell with the naked eye whether they were painted on site rather than at the factory? Any thoughts on your own cabinet painting experience?

Usually people paint cabinets because the wood finish has worn, or is just ugly. Yours look to be in good condition and aren’t a bad color. I think painting the walls a fresher white and changing hardware would give you the change you want without painting the cabinets.

    Whose hand?

We very recently had our similar cherry cabinets painted. They were painted by a company that specializes in this, not house painters. Before:

We had ours refinished by a company specializing in refinishing with great reviews. They sprayed the doors off site. Two years later the finish is peeling and cracking and I honestly wish I had just paid my GC to roll them with Advance - would have been cheaper and likely more durable. Our cabinets were white with already chipped and peeling factory paint (UltraCtaft), so based on my experience I would never want a painted kitchen again, only stained wood! Your cabinets are gorgeous, I absolutely would not ruin them with paint. Try changing out the hardware for something you love.

Your cabinets look very nice, and I wouldnt paint them. You could use new hardware on them. However, if you insist on painting them, then, you do not use a house painter. You use a cabinet refinisher, and get them done properly. There is a lot of prep, to painting cabinets, whether its a professional, or a diy. It is a whole lot of work, and takes a whole lot of time, to do them and do them right.

I wouldn't paint your cabinets. They seem to be in good shape.  Are you happy with your layout and just want something different.  Your countertop looks like laminate or at least not the best pairing with the wood.  I would invest in better countertops, something lighter and whiter. Remove the 4" backsplash and pick a lighter tile for a backsplash. New hardware.  Definitely paint your walls a white or cream white to freshen things once you have chosen the other finishes.

If you choose to paint the cabinets, get it done with the right type of cabinet refinishers and not house painters.  You could also just choose to paint the upper cabinets white.

There was just a story about updating wood kitchens today, check it out.

Thanks all. I was leaning toward not painting them (though I am considering getting new, white uppers). Cureent counter (deeply veined dark gray granite) is for sure getting chucked, likely for a white quartz and a hexagonal white backsplash. And yes, paint has GOT TO GO! This feedback was helpful in solidifying our plans. Thanks!!!

I have factory maple painted cabinets and I love them! I would only paint your cabinets if they take them to their factory and spray them there. Don’t have an on site company do them at your house. You want the paint to be as durable as car paint. It was going to cost me 20,000 for my kitchen to have them professionally sprayed. I ended up tearing my kitchen out and replacing them all. It was 50,000. It is an expensive investment. Your cabinets are beautiful and I wouldn’t do it with your cabinet doors:)

Never hire a house painter to paint cabinets. They will ruin them with house paint, whichbis 100% the wrong product. You can DIY for about $1500 invested in tools, high quality professional industrial wood coating finishing products, and 4-6 weeks of time, including the practice you’ll need to do before you touch your cabinets.

Or you can pay a pro 7-10K to do it for you, correctly. Join the group below, for How To on prep or to find a pro. You'll at least understand the WORK that goes into the job, and you won’t hire a wall painter. https://www.facebook.com/groups/PaintingKitchenCabinetsforProfit/

But those are right in style, and in good condition. No ways would I ever suggest painting them.

No way would I paint those cabinets. They’re Shaker, so very in style. They look like new, and the stain color is lovely. To my eye, the problem is the floor. It’s too close in shade to the cabs. I’d have chosen a lighter stain. Here’s my wood kitchen:

I really like your cabinets and wouldn't paint, and I also really like the granite. Agree about the floor -- it's just a really big expanse of everything same color. What about refinishing the floor in a coordinating lighter tone? Or for now get really big area rugs and see if visually that makes enough of a difference for you to know for certain it's not the cabinets that you want to change (or that nice gray granite)

I actually ordered cabinets without any finish and had a professional paint cabinets a pale grey and the island Behr Blueprint. None of the manufacturers I was interested had the best grey for the room. I’m thrilled and after 5 years every surface looks new. Glad I did it as I got exactly what I wanted. Plus Sarah (the painter) painted my kitchen table in a decorative white, gold and grey.

I agree with those who have said your floor is too close in color to your cabinets. My cabinets are similar to yours but my floors are much lighter. Here are a couple more pictures to help you visualize how you kitchen could look keeping the cabinets as is but lightening the floors

    Good luck with your decision.
