Propane generator

I live in houston where we get hurricanes and occasional freeze offs. i dont want to pay for a full blown generac system but would like a portable propane generator. what set up is needed so the generator can power my blower motor for the furnace in thr attic? should i consider anything else while building our home to help faciliate hookup to a portable generator? thank you

Consult with and have emergency backup generator system installed by a licensed electrician so that it works as designed, is adequately sized and that it's safe for all concerned.

Plus 1 on having the electrician that wire's house handle it. It's a 5 to 7 hundred dollar option to add fully automatic switch over. The difference in auto over manual will be more than offset by protecting systems against damage resulting from low voltage and short cycling when grid come's back on line.

If you have a PORTABLE Generator, you do not need an AUTOMATIC SWITCH!

Additionally, for the OP, the generator will also need to power the control circuitry for your oil or NG furnace. From the sound of your skill set, have an electrician wire in a manual transfer switch so as to allow using your portable generator to power your furnace and prevent simultaneously providing power from your house street supply.
