Ditto previous comment. Cherry is definitely not dated. It is a beautiful and timeless wood with many beautiful door styles and color options. Maple is also a very nice option. You need to find a door style you like then choose a color. If there is a wood that is "outdated" I would say some of the oaks.

I don't think cherry wood is dated. Things cycle in and out of fashion so quickly, its really difficult to predict how it will hold up style-wise. With kitchens, you can expect a shift every 10 years or so. Even white, which is supposedly timeless, changes in tone so warm white may be "it" for awhile, then white-white and so on. Same with countertops and backsplash tiles. As indianpatti suggests, if you can zero in on the look you're after, cherrywood may be a great choice, and of course it always depends on door style, cabinet hardware, countertops, etc.

I love Cherry cabinets... just bought them for my new kitchen. Even if it was outdated, I'd still want it :-)

It depends on where you live and if you plan to move in the next 5-7 years. Cherry will always be classic traditional on the East Coast, South and much of the Midwest. As RE Agent in California, cherry is a big NO out here for new kitchens, and are routinely ripped out, even if the cherry cabinets are super high quality (you can't restain or refinish here very easily due to crazy strict VOC laws). Red woods are just not popular here at all, and I can tell you everyone I know who did Brazilian cherry floor in the late 90s and early 2000s when they were en vogue has retained them (usually ebonized) or replaced them - after all in California 10-15 years is old! Gasp! Out here Walnut and exotic woods are the rage for high end, and nicely done maple and alder is as well. But do what you love if this is your long term home. One note- the redness of cherry can be overwhelming even when done right. Don't do cherry floors, and limit the amount of oranges/reds in the remaining materials and stick with nice neutrals or cool tones for a nice balanced look.

Cherry is actually the only wood I know of that is really timeless.

I agree-Cherry is timeless and elegant. My mother had Cherry raised panel cabinets installed in the 1970s and they still look like they were installed yesterday. Go for what you love
