Baby shampoos including J and J’s had sodium laureth sulfate in 2019.

I'm going to go shopping for some shampoo in about an hour.

I found White Rain on Amazon that looks to have all of the right ingredients, but it also says "sodium chloride" (salt). Is that a problem, or is the quantity too low to matter? If it's OK then I know that it can be found at the dollar stores.

I found Cetaphil at Family Dollar, 7.8oz for $5! But it's the only one I can find with sodium laureth sulfate. It still has sodium chloride as an ingredient, but it's so far down the list that I HOPE it doesn't matter:

My girlfriend pointed out that everyone started avoiding sulfates because it was stripping color from dyed hair, so I guess that's why sulfate is today's "canceled" ingredient. If you find it, you better buy as much as you can! LOL

I took pics of all of the options I could find if anyone wants me to post them. J&J, Gentle Steps (an apparent dollar store brand), and Aveeno were all sulfate-free, though.

What is the reason for applying the shampoo? As a surfactant, it will reduce surface water tension and allow greater water penetration down into the soil profile. But it will NOT aerate a lawn OR reduce compaction. Neither one are affected even slightly by any chemical means.

Colorado Extension service “It is simply wishful thinking to believe that a highly diluted solution of either of these (surfactant or humic acid) applied to a compacted soil will in any way affect soil bulk density (i.e. compaction). There is no indication that ANY of these products has ever been scientifically evaluated for effectiveness.”

Nebraska Extension service: “There is no evidence any of these products have been scientifically evaluated for effectiveness. Bottom line – its wishful thinking to believe such a solution will have any effect on compacted soil.”

I realize that there are some on this forum that swear by this shampoo methodology and it certainly can be helpful when dealing with a hydrophobic lawn issue. But it is also important to understand what it can and cannot do. And it cannot improve either aeration or compaction, as soap or shampoo or any similar so-called "liquid aeration" product contains nothing that would positively impact or correct or reduce these issues.

I'd read a lot of that, too :-/ And it's kinda weird, because I find a TON of reports from people talking about how much it helped!

So I recognize that it might not do anything, but I didn't read anything saying that it could hurt anything, either. As much time and money that I've invested so far, I figure that $5 and 30 minutes are a minor loss if it doesn't do anything.
