There will be a seed pod at the base of every individual morning glory bloom. Back many years ago when I was growing morning glories on a trellis and fence, I waited for the seed pods to change from a light green color to a light tan color. I just picked the tan pods like berries into a small bucket for temporary storage. There is a tremendous multiplication ratio with morning glories. A single seed produces a vine that can have hundreds of blooms and maybe thousands of seeds. Chances are your morning glory has already produced enough seed to act as a weed. I understand they are illegal in Arizona.

I've never saved the seeds because they reseed so prolifically on their own, as long as you want them growing in the same place.

I had read elsewhere that I need to wait for them to turn black? That one vine easily has 100 pods on it right now, though, and I'm afraid that if I wait for them to turn black then they'll pop open and drop seeds before I can get to them.

A few of the other vines are small enough that I can unwind them and sit them on top of a plastic trash bag, so that's easy enough. 4 or 5 of them are like the one pictured, though, and it'll be impossible to unwind.

This is my first time with MGs; do they die away immediately after the first frost? If so, I have MAYBE a week before the first frost, so I'd be tempted to just cut them down and let the seeds go.

I definitely do not!! LOL I didn't expect them to get that thick, and it totally blocks the view of my pond :-/

The seeds inside the pods are what get black. The pods turn from greenish to some shade of brown, ranging from tan to medium brown. You can save the pods and their seeds after a frost, or before the frost, at your convenience.
