knobs vs pulls debate

My husband and I are torn between knobs vs pulls on the uppers in our buffet area, the pantry and our trash pull out. Husband is worried pulls will go out of style. All lower drawers will have pulls. I taped out the options and attached pictures of 1) buffet with knobs vs pulls, 2) pantry with long pulls, short pulls, and knobs, and 3) the trash pull out with knobs vs pulls

I selected all pulls for my new kitchen as I have arthritis in my hands and pulls are easier to use. Looks great on different drawers and cabinets. Pulls won’t be going out of style. They’ve been around for ages and are still popular. With that being said, mix your knobs and pulls as you like. Just be consistent with door sizes.

I also selected a pull that could be installed either horizontally or vertically & so could be used on all drawers & cab doors. I wasn’t thinking of the ergonomics of that but @Sharon Fullen is right that pulls are better for joint or flexibility problems. I personally like the cleaner look of the same handles on all. And, when looking at pulls & knobs, a cabinet person told me this - knobs tend to loosen a bit over time as they’re used. This means a square knob placed ”squarely” will, over time turn a bit. She told me If I like things to be perfect then I should look at round knobs only since they will always look perfectly round! That cemented my decision to install pulls on drawers & cabinets! I know my fussy self & I didn’t want to spend my time straightening knobs!

The knobs will be round. The tape is just square. I am leaning towards the pulls. Thank you!

@stephiecaaakes I figured the square mock up handles were due to tape shape. But, those squares reminded me of the caution I was given bc I was looking at square knobs!

the pulls will give the upper cabinets a cleaner look, i personally love it just the way it is marked in the pictures, great job!

best of luck to your with your project!

I’m not sure I have a definite opinion, as I’m stuck in the same debate. I love the idea of taping things out; thank you. What type of tape did you use- just Scotch blue painters tape?

Kw, quality knobs will have a tiny "poke" on the backside that will the knob perfectly straight how it was installed. Mine have them, I've never had one twist at all.

@julie R. Yes just blue painters tape. I chose one that wasn’t too thick

I like knobs on doors. pulls on drawers in general.

I don't have strong feelings either way ... maybe I prefer pulls slightly for looks. However, my experience with knobs was the way I used them (usually hooking two fingers around them), my fingers would rub on the cabinet face, and my oft-used cabinets had the paint wear off in that area (they were new when we moved in and I had wear after 4 years). So, I opted for pulls on our new cabinets for everything except the stacked upper cab. Something to consider maybe?

All sorts of different things to consider when making this decision.

Right now I have all knobs, and when my hands are filthy from cooking and I need to get something out of a drawer or cupboard I can hook the knob between my second and third fingers where they are clean and open it up without putting the dirty part of my hands on the actual knob. As I did this the other night I was asking myself what kind of maneuver I could do if I had pulls instead.

I like to mix them up.

Personally prefer wide stainless steel -- comfortable to the hand -- pulls for both doors and drawers.

I'm going with all pulls, 5". I have a few long drawers that will get 2.

I used knobs on doors (mother-of-pearl/silver), pulls on drawers (Amerock). Trash pull-outs got different eclectic iron pulls so they would be easily distiguishable, and easy to pull put with a pinky and dirty hand!

We have knobs on doors (uppers) and all our lowers are drawers or pullouts, and they have pulls. Only exception is our pantry, which has a tall door, so we did a pull on that for ease of use.

Knobs are pocket catchers for me so no knobs. This time around, I chose pulls for everything because I had to and I chose a finish that would blend in. I prefer not to have any pulls or knobs; my last house had neither and it was awesome. Unfortunately this builder made me choose one or the other.

I went with pulls on the drawers and knobs on doors, very happy with my decision since I have a small kitchen and wanted to minimize the size of black hardware and I generally prefer using knobs in doors. I think pulls look better in some kitchens. I prefer the look in your first and third photo, because it is less heavy. I think @User 's kitchen looks amazing because her dark hardware is minimized by incorporating more knobs than pulls. The hardware distribution in her kitchen is not heavy and is delightfully interesting. It works for her kitchen because some of her drawers are narrow and she thought in advance about what was being stored in those drawers.

@MaryBocaTX off topic but I love your pull-out island seats and counter. That is so fun and what a great idea.

@anj_p, Thank you! I wanted seating (mainly for grandkids), but I really just don't like all the legs from multiple stools, etc. It seems so cluttered to me.

We have pulls on all of our cabinets.... I hate my pulls though (I do love my kitchen) because the edges that stick out grab us constantly especially with the kids trying to reach something on the counters. Or they rip out my headphones while I am trying to clean. Though honestly pulls vs knobs you really just got to buy a big variety and hold them up to get a true sense of size.

Agree with Erica….many times pulls can be just as much of a pain as knobs are as far as getting caught on things. Unless they’re completely rounded with no part that sticks out they can still catch on pockets, button down shirts etc.

@Erica Langley wow, you just made my day! I had originally chosen pulls that look like yours, but at the last minute decided to get some rather standard U-shaped pulls that don't have the extensions on them. I have been questioning my decision ever since - and now I'm so happy I changed!

@Erica Langley Seems the best case scenario with pulls for doors & drawers is selecting a pull with no edges that grab. I love my pulls - love the ergonomics of them, no edges to grab pockets & I prefer the look of a single type of cabinet hardware. My island is ebony color & cabs are cinnamon - this ORB color is great for both.

I just put my order in for most of my cabinet hardware and went mostly with pulls for drawers and knobs for doors. I did pulls on some taller doors in a linen closet. My cabinet doors aren't in yet, so a bit hard to get a feel for how the hardware will look.
