Wall/Staircase decor help

I don’t have that much wall space in the house and want to add some art but wasn’t sure what size I should put above the couch here. horizontal? vertical? would it even look right to add anything or is it too small? I don’t want to remove the mirror because it makes the room look bigger. any advice is appreciated!!

Mirrors only work when they reflect something worth seeing twice that does not. A large piece of art like a landscape will do the same thing to make the space feel larger . You need lighting over head lighting is only one part of a good lighting plan you need floor lamps table lamps etc. IMO the sectional is too large for your space but of course we need to see the whole space. We at least nee to see the whole waall where the mirror is now.

here are a couple other pictures of the room. i’d like to eventually do a mounted tv fireplace wall where the tv is (the house is 100 years old. we just recently purchased it and did a lot of work. we are still getting settled/figuring things out)

Could tv and the 2 chairs be exchanged? In regards to area above couch, I’d add a neutral collage with black and wood frames working with the slant, to create a cozy, intetesting corner. You will have to play around with size, quantity and placement, so lay them on the floor first and use picture hanging tape vs nails

If it were me, I’d move mirror (hang vertically perhaps at bottom of staircase) and connect that corner, creating a more balanced feel.

    thanks for the suggestions.
unfortunately there isn’t enough space to replace the chairs with the tv without blocking the windows.

I don't have advice on your topic, but I wanted to say that I love the dark blue wall in the stairwell. You have inspired me!

We know you said you didn't want to move the mirror, but there might be a better place to put the mirror and have it reflect something nice. You could always try a nice large piece of artwork where the mirror is and then a small framed piece or two of artwork on the angled wall. Here are just a few designs of ours that might just help you decide what you want to do.

Please submit more photos of the room taken gradually going all around.

I can say a few things for sure,

Having the sectional and the chairs all against the wall is breaking one of the commandments of furniture arrangement. It is not good at all.

If the mirror is to stay, and I am not convinced yet, the seating has to be arranged first, the mirror should be hung vertically with some interesting things to the left.

Hanging it horizontally like that makes it look like it belongs over a bedroom dresser. And really, I would rather see it hung vertically over a dining room buffet towards the left so it reflects your well-dressed table and chic diners, and to the and you can hang some vintage plates and bracket with an urn or marvelous candlesticks, etc.

Your problem with how to arrange the furniture is why so many Houzzers despise sectionals. When one moves, they just don't work, and they don't play well with other furniture. Are you staying in this house? Have you thought about getting rid of the sectional and purchasing a good quality clean-lined sofa such as a tuxedo that you can have forever that will go with everything and fit everywhere?

I haven't seen the rest of the space, but the chandelier seems excessive.

On the other hand, the rug is underwhelming and boring. You packed a punch with those strong blue chairs and wall. But the rug is blah.

Why not get an Oriental or Persian carpet?

    The coffee table is underwhelming.

Why not get a large ottoman and you can put a large tray on it?

You also need a smaller table for the two chairs.
