The thought of ceiling tiles makes me shiver.
Are you stuck on ceiling tiles or are there more options you could consider?
Otherwise go for large squares.

Rinqreation : Why does it make you shiver ? Many people advised me to use that in the basement as i'ts easier to put wires, if water runs somewhere someday... It's not my only option but we are planning on going with it.

Why do you need tiles on the ceiling?

As a crime cop,rhinestone ceiling squares can reopen a cold case faster than a thirsty husband.Of course I"m kidding, but I must admit i chringe whenever I see them. Tracks unaligned, pop- a -square..a anything might wonder out. Not to mention, retro's cute but not this stuff..
does anyone reminder study hall, detention, well..it's.shades of my past. that I'd rather forget expect the spit ball contests. The cling factor was nothing short of superb. While mounting them to the ceiling per CA code 75649'q these cover-ups are a weekend nightmare. Simply thinking of them gives me a rash. The real kicker are the instructions:
it's clearly stated "ALL not SOME assembly required and the final moment...stepping back admiring your new clued in place ceiling, hardening. Or all the tracks in place hardening...and you exclaim. I forgot the sprinkler cut out and the co2 opening holes. (there's a lot that goes on the ceiling besides crack and peel ceiling squares. Ha Ha!

A drop ceiling with acoustic tiles reminds me of a badly-designed office building. I would think about other options.

Smooth like your second picture. My tiles are in a vacation home so I don't have photo to show. I put in the coffered ceiling which is dimensional instead of flat. I think the smooth squares are a better look than the textured. I would go for cutting in half. The coffered tiles are really expensive but they make a dimensional track that gives the same look. This can be applied later. You can also paint dark if you are going for the man cave look. They also come in wood and metal. The home where I installed the tiles is an older renovation project. Electric, central vac, plumbing is all ran under the main floor and we still have a long way to go so I had to use this kind of ceiling. Looking at the old drop ceiling that was in place I thought like the others above. I was pleasantly surprised. Your ceiling will look great. Do a search on houzz under basements for drop ceilings. You will see some beautiful basements with drop ceilings.

Here's a couple that will look like yours. Flat panel with square tiles. The last one shows dimensional track with painted tiles.

We have had both a drop ceiling and a drywalled one in our basements, and there are pros and cons to both (I can tell you that when we had recessed lights and a new heating vent installed in our current basement, there was a LOT of drywall repair on that ceiling, which made me miss the drop ceiling from our previous house). If you think there's potential work down the line that involves wires/plumbing, a drop ceiling is a much better way to go.

I like the plain look better, myself. I think it would look like cut to square, just like the ones linlac has provided as examples. And I definitely don't think they look too modern - that would be our neighbors, who simply left the ceiling open and painted it black.

Laqfoil that is a great idea for a modern basement.

I think most ceiling tiles are ugly, especially the fibre and pale grey types, but I do like wooden or tin panels.

Thank you Lilac for your ideas and for taking the time to select pictures. I've looked already and I found a lot of pictures that I loved but it's to find the corresponding picture with the tiles I'm going for that Is hard.

The tiles that you can see on my first picture are not expensive. I'm afraid the pictures you've the first group of pictures you selected are real thick wood panels. I saw those in the store but they are way more expensive !

2 persons suggested that I do a centre insertion, to use 2 different type of tiles... What do you think about that ?

Leslie, thank you ! I'm afraid the plain tiles will look cheap because they are thin. Their texture is really close to dry wall.

I'm wondering why is it the only one that is really plain, most of them have a texture. Will it feel to "office" ?

Our family room will be divided in half : one side for home theatre that we want to be comfortable and warm, the other side will mostly be to play hockey (have 2 boy).

I want the room to be actual but also changeable.

We've already went over budget for every step we had to choose stuff for the house. That decision is the last We have to make. We are moving in in lest that a month ! Can't believe it !!!! I'm sooo happy !

Honestly, I don't think the ceiling tiles are what is going to make the room look warm and comfortable. I really think the paint color on the walls and the furniture in the room is what's going to make the difference.

You should be focusing on drawing the eye downward, away from the ceiling, and if do, then no one is really going to notice whether you went with textured or flat ceiling tiles.

If you look at these three photos, the basements have all been painted a similar color, and they use lots of warm tones to brighten the space and make it feel cozy.







By the way, if you are looking for warm and comfortable, I would definitely NOT go with an open ceiling.

I agree with Leslie. The pictures posted with the plain tiles are beautiful rooms. I picked the smooth finish so they looked like drywall. I would get the best quality you can afford for sound insulation. The fancier tiles I showed you were ideas that you could do down the road if you decide to change the look. The laqfoil is a wrap that is applied to the tile. Makes me think you may be able to do something really cool with wallpaper and paint. Media rooms look good with dark painted ceilings. Some ideas for down the road.

Thank you again Linlac and Leslie ! I went back to the store today and they helped me by calculating the cost of differents tiles. They will call me back tomorrow to give me a price for tiles that are smooth and not too expensive I hope.
