The tall tree in the back was a common buckthorn which I removed and everything else is the neighbors fence with rose of Sharon growing through it. It does the job for privacy but there is no depth to it. Not interesting enough for me to want to see from the deck all year. To each their own though. This should help with that.

Great choices, you are a making a positive difference for wildlife! American hazelnut (Corylus americana), swamp rose or Carolina rose (Rosa palustris/carolina), and pussywillow (Salix discolor) are great shrubs for birds as well. They all host a lot of caterpillar species that the birds need to raise their young, and the rose and hazelnut also make mast for the winter. Of those I only grow the pussywillow. I also grow Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), and I planted a bunch of Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) this year. Not a shrub but gold finches go nuts for coneflowers like Echinacea and Rudbeckia laciniata.

Thanks skip ! I actually planted a spice yesterday after work in a different bed ! They are supposed to be great for wildlife. I recently read that 90 percent of a birds diet is insects. So I am looking to attract them. Elderberry is on my list of plants to get in my yard.

How about something evergreen? There will be a lot of bare twigs in winter. I don’t know if there are any native BLEs suitable for your area.

Or conifers for birds to dive into for protection.

Careful. Depending on where you are, red-twig dogwood can be completely defoliated by dogwood sawflies every year.
