Stair Runner, Am I making a big mistake?

last modified: 4 years ago

Looking for quick advice before I pull the trigger. My mom is visiting in a coupe of weeks and I am trying to rush install a runner on my wooded stairs so they're not slippery. My kids have also complained about it being slippery. I personally like the look of the wood and how easy it is to dust. I'm strongly considering this dark herringbone wool runner and would love advice before I proceed. Here's the carpet I am planning to use, Color is Raven

It's a beautiful pattern and color. If you would like to post a photo of your stairs and surrounding area, that would help in knowing if it'll work from a design perspective.

Sorry the photos were not successfully uploaded in the post. Here they are

Runner looks nice but without seeing the stairs and surrounding upper and lower rooms it’s difficult to advise.

Could you put the individual stair pads instead of a runner? It may look better on your beautiful stairs

This is the Raven against the stairs. Thank you 🙏

No to individual pads. Those look like Granny’s house. It’s a shame to hide most of the steps but safety first always.

Thank you 🤗! I like the Color right above the raven in the picture, it’s called Fossil. I wanted something to ground the whole area so it doesn’t look too busy. I’m torn!!

I would chose a color from the tile. Flip the board and lean it against the 1st step to see how the fossil goes with the tile

If you are doing a runner, I like the middle color better in your picture. Also , don't go so wide that you cover almost all the stair - it's a shame to cover them up.

You may want to look into the stair treads. There are many that are really nice

    Good luck!

The middle color on the board looks like it picks up the colors in your entry tile.

I'd hate to cover those stairs up. What about a non-slip stair tape.

I am not sure I would do a diagonal with the striated marble floor set on the diagonal. They seem to compete. What about something with blue in it, there is a lot of blue in the adjacent living room.

My daughter in law slipped down our stairs holding the baby. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. Within a week I had ordered non slip stair treads. They are wonderful and it has been 3 years. Once in a while will lift up, wash the stairs and put them back. Amazing and couldn’t be happier with the safety.

I think the raven color looks too dark. Your stairs are gorgeous. I've slipped on carpet stairs but never on hardwood. Get some slippers or socks with non-skid soles for your family instead. You can also walk on wood stairs in shoes without anything getting dirty and worn, which is safer than socks on a carpet runner.

All great suggestions, thank you!! I didn’t pull the trigger! I didn’t choose this tile and agree it may compete. I’ve put a dark mat and a gray blanket for a better visual of gray vs. black and I realize I have to think it deeper, not rush and possibly use one of the temporary solutions you all suggested.

Carpet can also be a slip hazzard on stairs. I would talk to a hardwood floor specialist about a clear coat non slip finish that could be added to the wood. Get your mom and kids some rubber soled slippers in the meantime.

I'd be inclined to put down an ornate Persian-rug type of runner.

Regardless of what you decide on, it should be safer and quieter.

The Fossil color would be my choice among the three on the board. But I agree not to rush--this is not going to be inexpensive, and you want to be sure.

I've also seen ads for clear non slip tapes for stairs. I've never seen them in person so can't speak to what they might look like.

I believe someone else had mentioned as well a kind of top coat that is supposed to be anti slip.

Hope you find something safe and beautiful..

Following since I want to remove the wall to wall carpeting on my steps but then I know I will need a runner or something to make the wood not slippery. Wish I could help you.

    Wondering what you decided?
