I live in UK and I have summer song. It has only 3-4 very tall lanky canes after 2 years. Not a good growth habit. Colour is like your second photo. And I love it's colour and would really like to have a better rose in that colour as it is so unique.

@daisy08(London UK) I've read that SS is not easy to grow for a lot of people. I wish DA would produce another rose with these interesting red/orange tones. Maybe Benjamin Britton is close? Never seen him in person. Or Christopher Marlowe. Always liked his colorations in photos.

There is something unique about summer song. The whole petal has mostly same solid matt colour. I too wish DA or someone else introduce a similar rose.

Summer song is coral orange. Pat Austin has similar flowers but Pat Austin is lacks the coral bit.

"Summer Song" was sold in North America for just a year or two by one or two Canadian companies that propagate and sell roses around 2008. I have received the David Austin Roses catalogue for many years and have never seen it offered for sale in the US in their catalogue, even though they obtained a patent for this rose in the US in 2007, For reasons that no one knows, this rose does poorly in North America. When the reports of poor performance reach DAR, they pulled it from their North American program.

I was fortunate to get a grafted (Rosa multiflora) plant of this rose from someone who purchased two in the short time that it was offered by the Canadian company. My specimen produced thin, spindly canes in spring and a few 3 inch flowers of an unusual beautiful 'burnt orange' color. It is not a fast repeater. It does poorly in the heat of our summers, with 30 or so days of triple digit temperatures. By the time fall rolls around, the plant seems to grow dormant.

I have seen a few threads on this forum from someone in the San Francisco area having better results with this rose. It sometimes seems that we want what we can't have. I have sent cuttings to Peter Schneider of Freedom Roses this past summer, who will be propagating this rose for sale. He may have a few plants for sale in 2022 or 2023. Good luck!

Another rose that we grow that is somewhat similar to "Summer Song", is "Louise Clements", which is available from Heirloom Roses. It is an appealing shade of true orange (not a coral orange with pink tones) with a flower structure similar to that of "Summer Song". "Liverpool Remembers" is a rose with a classic hybrid tea flower form that has a true orange color. Both of these roses are easy to grow in our climate and better performers in the garden than "Summer Song".

@john_ca Thanks for this info John. Great to read about a rose that does poorly for majority of people as much as roses everyone praises. I still love the look of Summer Song's colors, but I don't know if I trust I'd be able to grow it better than you or most people who have posted about it's difficulty.

I really like the look of Louise Clements though, so thank you for the info on the similar roses! They both look beautiful but the colors and form of LC is pretty close to Summer Song. Maybe I will try one from Heirloom.

@daisy08(London UK) Daisy, thanks so much for the pictures! I love them all...such variety in the red/orange tones. Summer song made me think of Pat Austin + Boscobel (the coral pink tones) but combined into one. Maybe I'll just try sticking Pat and Boscobel next to each other to get the effect :) Your roses are all so vibrant and beautiful.

I still want Summer Song...still think it would love the PNW... But Benjamin Britten is a very interesting color...pinky orange and glows.

Ann, I still want to try Summer Song too :) I'm right by the water, so my temps don't get too high here. I'm also interested in Benjamin but want to see what kind of red he is in person before buying...he almost looks a little too bold if that's a possibility.

@john_ca Was looking through Heirlooms "unusual color" category and saw this rose 'Safari' that I think you talked about in an old post. Has anyone grown this rose? I think @JoJo (Zone 7, high desert) showed a picture once. Would love to see more of her since HMF has so few pics and hear how she does for people. I like the shifting colors. Looks sort of similar to Summer Song and has good reviews on Heirloom.

I have grown 'Safari' for around 7 years. 'Safari' is a very good garden rose for us. It has a fast repeat and grows into a dome-shaped plant. Our plants are around 4 feet high and across. It has flowers from the top of the plant nearly all the way to the ground. The petal count in Safari is less than that of 'Summer Song'. At times, the color of 'Safari' is similar to that of 'Summer Song' but it often drifts into pink or coral tones; 'Summer Song' is more consistently red-orange or burnt orange. This rose ('Safari') was never patented and roots easily.

What about Sweet Mademoiselle.... I think it is similar in color.... in fact when I saw your first picture I thought that was it.....

It sometimes looks a little pinker than the photo, but most of the time it is orange in my climate which is zone 10 Florida.

I tried 2 Summer Songs and gave them prime spots and fussed over them to no avail. They were poor plants, hardly bloomed [but when they did, were gorgeous] and they died. It is hot in Texas but I gave them afternoon shade. I spoke to David Austin office in Tyler, Tx and they said it did not do well anywhere and they quit selling it. Just luck of the draw that a beautiful rose would end up on such a dud of a plant!

Sharon, thanks for reminding me of Sweet Mademoiselle. I like her bold colors so I'll keep looking for her at nurseries. Might have to order her online.

Judith, yeah I've read that it does terrible and is hard to grow. Maybe that's making me want it more? :) I really love the colors on it. Seems like it falls nicely in between Carding Mills bold orange/reds and Benjamin Britten's cooler looking red tones. I've read it's done well for cool areas overseas so hoping maybe it'd do ok here in my coastal climate if I can ever find her.

Lady of Shallot ranges from peach to pinkish and is a climber in my warm zone. I have it is part shade wrapped around and obelisk and it always has a few flowers on it all summer.

Stephanie, thanks for these beautiful pics of LOS. I finally found one and have been growing her in a big pot. Have n't seen the deep orange or red yet in mine....mostly just deep yellow flowers. But hopefully she'll show some redder tones over time. I love how yours looks.
