I think your best advice will come from other cabinet installers. That big piece of wood is filling in a space caused by the widths of the cabinet not adding up to the space of the back wall. Ideally, they would have used two pieces of wood half the size of the one they used and divided it evenly and so the uppers and lowers lined up. My guess is that the professional installers on this forum will tell you that the job wasn't done right. But I don't know what the conditions were on or behind the uppers. And I don't know if there were other factors involved. I know I would be very unhappy if it were my kitchen. I hope someone gives you advice on how to get a change if the person who installed them won't fix it.

Thank you, that was my initial gut feeling before deciding to forget about it, but now it’s bothering me again. There was no reason why they did it like that. I think they didn’t realize while they were doing it, and then once they reach that part of the job they just kept going and hoped I wouldn’t notice. I asked them to fix it and they said they would but then didn’t show up the day they were supposed to, they then promised to come back another time. I don’t want to have to hunt them down. At this point maybe I’m better off just paying someone else to fix it. I appreciate your input.

It would be a fairly quick repair if they have more of the filler stock- you will have some extra holes in the back of the cabinets since they won’t line up with the studs any longer.

I didn’t even notice it until you pointed it out. I wouldn’t worry about it and consider myself lucky if that i had such a nice kitchen!

Beautiful kitchen! As previously said, the filler should be used on both sides. It can and it should be fixed since now you have your eye fixed on it and it will always bother you.

Most likely a new filler would have to be ordered to be split for a snug fit.
