Help! What color area rug goes best in this living room?

I ordered a rug from west elm that just arrived today and I don’t love it :( It didn’t look as stripey online and has a lot more grey than I thought. Does anyone have any advice on what color/type of rug looks best in this space with these sand color leather sofas? Im open to color! Thank you!

How would you feel about a blue rug that pulls a shade from the painting?\

I would be happy that rug has more gray. I am not a fan of 50 shades of tan/brown. I would bring some color in your living room. Or return your rug.

I would look at a larger rug so it's more centered to the fireplace, and remove those other two small rugs, that seem to detract from the space. Sometimes it helps to just buy a couple rugs in smaller size so you can see how they looks in the space, easier to return when finished.

Here are some ideas for your room. Rug is from rugs-direct. You have blocks of big color so you need some alternative accessories to balance the large pieces. I put a pair of etageres either side of fireplace. I don’t think there is a mantel so these or something similar would lighten room visually. I see baseboard heating (?) so open shelves wouldn’t block heat. Then add some art glass and books to bring in dimension and interest. I think a lighter brighter piece of art over fireplace would help too. The art looks very special so it might work very well in the dining room. I know you only asked about the rug, but the room will benefit from a few more tweaks. I would consider some light drapery panels for sides of bay window to soften that wall just a bit. Nothing heavy.

I also put a beefier lamp on your end table. 😊

idk, but on my monitor it looks good. I like the subtle stripes which echo the dining room chairs and the hutch in the corner.

I don’t care for the rug either. The stripes make it look too informal for your room and the color does not blend with the furniture. (The other rugs you already have seem to indicate you like a more formal style.)

How about a navy solid? I think navy would look good with your furniture (which I love).

The last rug that @Celery showed you does wonders for your room. There is a lot of sand-caramel-brown going on and lighter colors like the ivory and blue will make it all feel “lighter”. Same for the etageres @Flo Mangan showed you. I also agree you need to take the smaller rugs out of the room and go for the one “wow” larger rug.

I think the Ralph Lauren Tristan rug would be beautiful in there, the colors seem perfect and it fits your aesthetic well. And I like your other rugs scattered around.

Wow thank you so much everyone for all the amazing advice & visuals! Sooo helpful! I agree about the new rug being too casual for the space. This is my parents former house and I’ve recently moved in and began updating the space - my style is a little more casual than my parents so I’m trying to find a good balance. The picture above the fireplace will definitely not be staying - it went well with the previous wall paint/rug that was in the room but I recently repainted it a lighter color and got rid of the darker reddish rug that they had in there.

I would consider putting a larger rug in there but there’s an opening in the room and it might not look so good. I’ll add a picture (don’t mind the moving boxes 🙂) Jinx and Flo - I’m a big fan of the rugs you recommended and will be taking a look! Celery - love the idea of adding curtains on the side. Thank you!! Ps. jinx - my beagle somehow always makes it into these Houzz pictures 😄

You are definitely getting some good advice here. Love Flo’s and Celery’s suggestions. I like the idea of a rug that pulls in just a little of the sofa colour and injects a new colour. Aqua or sage or blue would be complementary to the tan furniture. I would also consider updating lighting if budget allows. It will a big impact.

Flo- thanks for all the extra feedback. I’m currently checking out some etageres (I didn’t even know that’s what they were called) to put next to the fireplace! Your tips are beyond helpful, thank you!

Here is the rug I put in my mock up. I picked largest size. It’s best if you can get all big furniture front legs on rug. I think you can pull the chair to right of fireplace into room a bit more and onto rug. Btw, could you take a closer picture of the art over fireplace please. It looks like a very nice piece. I am intrigued by it.

Sofa is contemporary, so to me nearby rug complements it fine.... in another spot, curtains are good for another look. Also you have rugs around.. they don't all have to be the same.

Yes, I like the art over the fireplace very much. As Flo says, I would also like to see a closer pic of it. Is it an oil, print, or …? It’s my favorite thing in your room other than your cute doggie.

Art in dining room. This looks like old world painting and could have nice value.

Love that!! Here is a picture of the painting. It’s oil on canvas and it’s by a Peruvian painter, Alfredo Alcalde.

I did some research and there was an auction sale of a similar painting of this artist last year but the sale price isn’t listed. How’s, the mere fact it was part of a hood auction indicates high value. The artist is Peruvian. The furnishings you have might be Peruvian too? Does that make sense. I think you have a wonderful piece of original art and if family related, a real treasure. Here’s the auction photo of the art I found.

Just looked at the back of the painting and it says 03. I remember my parents purchasing a few other pieces of his artwork as well! So interesting to know his art pieces were a part of a hood auction. The furnishings in the house are also handmade in Peru and were shipped here when we moved from Peru in 1993. I love love love them 🙂

That is very exciting and you might want to do a gallery wall of his art on that dining room wall. Very special. You can research further and see what you can discover. Thanks for sharing. You might want to contact a local museum and see if they could recommend an appraiser so you could insure your pieces. Obviously, they are family heirlooms so protecting them is key. As a minimum take good photos of everything front and back in case of need to prove their value. Good luck.

At least 3 wonderful houzzers posted mockups. Just me, but celery's added medium blue curtains with your current rug seemed subtle - cause there's good focal point" of fp and art above. But they're all nice.
