What do you think of Andersen Renewal windows & doors?

We got an estimate for replacement of a patio door and a 6-ft-wide x 4 ft tall kitchen window. Frankly I'm horrified at the price, but I have not looked at any other windows and doors yet.

Andersen has this line of windows made for replacement in existing buildings, as opposed to new construction. They don't seem to have the flange around the outside, so they can install them without removing siding. I don't know how they seal them in but presumably they have a system. They have to be sourced from and installed by Andersen, you can't go buy them at the local supplier and install them yourself.

The patio door now is one swinging door and one fixed window. They don't have one of those so the replacement was a sliding door. The window is now two windows that each slide up vertically to open. They would replace with a fixed center window and a horizontally sliding window on either side.

Their material is similar to Trex decking: plastic with wood dust. It seems sturdy and the units nicely made.

Guy said all the other windows are either wood, wood covered with vinyl or metal (which will rot under the covering), or vinyl. No one has their magic durable composite.

The cost for the whole shebang? $13k and change! For a door and a window. This is with a discount for buying more than one item. But prices will go up soon because of inflation.

Sorry but my car cost only a little more than that. I just don't spend like that. But someone must buy this stuff! Yikes.

What's a good window? Walkout ranch, 1989, vinyl siding, not a dump but not a fancy expensive home either. Very middle class.

I've searched on here and found various posts about Renewal by Andersen. I'm not the first person who thought they were very expensive. Also found some good info on the differences between the Renewal and other Andersen window lines sold at big box stores. Assuming this info is still good after 5-15 years, it will be useful.

There's always some who like and some who don't like any given product. Was just starting to think Pella might be good and then found someone complaining about it. :-]

Typically considered to be very over priced for an average at best product, You can better. Look for an Okna, Softlite, or Sunrise dealer perhaps. These can be location dependent so if you post the region of the country you reside in we can possible help with a better direction.

Not a terrible window, but many find their tactics and prices leaving something to be desired. There is a reason why no other manufacturers use a similar material to fibrex, it really doesn't offer any benefits that can't be achieved by other materials. More marketing sizzle than anything. There are other composites and fiberglass that have more to offer IMO, such as a few Canadian fg companies like Inline, or the Starmark Evo composite from Okna.

This is a little off the topic. While I love our Andersen 400 windows...we have one 8' Pella full glass wood door, and one by Andersen. The Pella is hand down a much nicer door. I know that their windows don't have a great rep, but this is my experience regarding a same size door that cost only a couple hundred more by Pella.

...and I should mention that my pricing experience with Andersen was very different. Husband is a general contractor, he installed all retro fit and new construction windows...and we bought through a window broker. I just wanted to say that come companies might excel at windows but not doors...looks wise no one would be able to tell that our 8' doors are not by the same company...you are allowed to mix ;)

the andersen windows your husband installed were not renewal by andersen. its a totally different window from what andersen sells in stores.

We had Renewal by Andersen come out and give us a quote on 9 windows, double hung, no door walls. 2 were small bathroom windows, 6 were bedroom windows and one is a crank out about 24" x 16". Their price $23,000. Nope, just nope. Went to a local place, where we got our side door and storm door. Their price for windows similar to the ones we have in our addition is $7,700.

All I know is, the local Renewal by Anderson company has been advertising its "sale" in its newspaper ads for the entire 30 years I've lived here.

Similar experience here as @kathyg_in_mi. We were new homeowners, first time to be exact, and naively had the renewal people come in for the longest sales pitch. Complete with high pressure tactics such as "if you sign right now, we'll give you this lower price" --- hmm okay, so tomorrow it iwll be magically more expensive? Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out.

We have a SMALL 1970s ranch and got quoted something insane like $25,000. We ended up going with a local company for something like $7k instead. Very happy with the windows and installation going on 15+ years now.

@Window Genius my point was to the OP that the bad reputation of Pella windows doesn't mean that they don't make a nice door. He needs a window and a door. Also, some of our replacement windows were full custom as they went into brick walls...most were new construction (addition) and ordered from the the sizes available. Yes, the replacements were much more expensive...I mentioned it because my experience wasn't that of a home owner using a store.

Hey I forgot to come back and thank all of you for the replies. Good to know I was not crazy, their prices ARE very high.

The 'discount for today that will disappear tomorrow' was $1400 in our case. <eyeroll>

Luckily the guy was pretty cool about the sales presentation. It was late and he had two hours to drive. I think he skipped a lot of stuff.

We'll move on to other brands.

Its a decent window, just not as great as they claim.

We have 48 windows (10 are transoms) in our home. Renewal by Andersen quoted $123K to replace all our windows. That price was after their Black Friday, “best deal of the year” promo. They slammed aluminum clad windows, yet they use aluminum cladding over the brick mold.

  • PRO

They also slam vinyl when their window is 60% vinyl resins by constitution. Go figure.

Dont forget the 40 or whatever percent that’s wood flower ( saw dust ).

  • PRO

Don't confuse an aluminum clad window with cladding the trim surrounding it. I'm not advocating for or against aluminum clad windows, but those are very different applications despite being right next to each other. Cladding the exterior trim in aluminum is pretty standard stuff for most window replacements.

In 2020 we purchased Andersen Renewal windows for 2 large double hung in the front of our house and a big 3 window large picture window. Loved it. The cost $9k

Covid has stopped us from completing all the other windows. We just had a Rep give us his estimate for double hung 9 and it's over $20k.

That was with a discount, it was $26k with no discount.

We almost fainted. Is there something happening in the window world that we are not aware of? Naturally, at our ages, we won't be buying Renewal by Andersen.

Now we have to search for replacement windows that are quality. Does that exist? There is so much negativity about vinyl and owners are getting rid of them in my neck of the woods. Right now, it feels like we will be looking for a needle in the haystack.

Our budget was $15k and boy, were we naive or the prices at Renewal have been increased. It ues to be the double hung were $1500 each. But now they're closer to $3k.

There have been price increases up the wazoo in the past 18 months or so. I've yet to see any indication that the supply chain and labor shortage issues are letting up, so I wouldn't expect those price increases to slow down either, certainly they will not reverse at any point... This is not to say anything one way or the other regarding your specific quote, but to answer your question "is something happening in the window world", the answer is yes. Material shortages, labor shortages, shipping cost increases, etc.

As far as vinyl, there are some very good vinyl windows on the market, I'd say maybe the top 10% or so. Be careful not to toss those out of consideration based on the poor products out there, there are both great products and poor products of every window material.

VERY expensive service. The consultant gave me a quote of the items I wanted changed and said don't look at that price, that is the manufacturer's price. You don't pay that, the price he gave was indeed much less. However, with financing, I will end up paying that outrageous amount because of the finance charge added. Andersen keeps promoting 'deferred interest up to 12 months with no payments'. However, when financed, you do pay monthly payments and they add on finance charges (costing about half of the price of amount of the items) which makes total payments almost double than what was originally financed. I would NOT advice being financed through Greensky. Hopefully others can read this before making the same mistake I have made.

I am no fan of RBA to be sure, but you may possibly be misunderstanding the financing. If you took the 0% interest for 12 months promotion, the interest does accrue during the 12 months, however you don't have to pay any of the interest if you pay the balance off within the 12 months. The interest is accruing just in case you don't pay it off, in which case it gets added to the loan which then converts to a longer term, standard type of loan. Hopefully I explained this adequately. It is very confusing and you're not the first to think this way.

Plenty of overpriced and shady stuff out there in this space....but I don't think this is necessarily one of them. Especially since they aren't doing the financing in house.

You sure that is RBA...? Never seen them that low. Like not in the 20+ years I have been doing this.

ALWAYS, get 3 - 5 quotes and check references. If you do business with RBA just know that you overpaid.

Just had a bid from Anderson for $25k for a simple sliding glass door in Charleston, SC - standard not custom - are they insane? Bought a new car for dad for $30k out the door - I don’t think they want the job - really bad service - canceled on me 2 times before a guy came in measured & left w no info on the product - really unprofessional

Had Hansen’s out to give a quote on our windows in our old home. They used high pressure sales. Kept having to call the ”factory” or his ”boss”. The windows were nice, but we were put off by the high pressure tactics. He did get the price down to a resonable price, but by that time (3 hours later) we were done with them!

We had 30 very large windows installed by renewal + a very nice although plain patio slider which performs just like the day it went in. However we had 8 casements,8 double hung again all over sized, the difference is that the 8 and 8 are felt colonial style “historical “ look. Grilles on the inside are “removable “ but the exteriors are “permanent “ within a month after being installed back in July of 2024 the exterior grilles began to come off in certain areas on 23 sashes. They ordered new ones, we opened before they could install them, same exact issue. They ordered again….. guess what, when we opened before the install, same exact thing. Anyone with these windows need to check to make sure they’re not doing this. Please let me get some responses if you have had this series installed. I believe they call it their acclaim series.

  • last year

To be fair the local franchise is working with us, but I believe the Andersen corporation is just dragging their feet on an obvious factory issue.

  • last year

From what I can figure is that the fibrex is expanding and contracting but the grill gets a little contraction pressure and pushes the weakest double stick tape off the glass, then it’s game over, cause it is not going back down. Although no one will give an explanation. Apparently they believe they have figured out the problem, but when I ask what was the issue? What’s the fix? It’s crickets

  • PRO
    last year

Likely a machining issue on the grids where they were cut too tight.

  • last year

Kind of what I thought. They told me they figured out what the issue was,yet they wouldn’t tell me what happened and what’s the remedy. So I’m still not convinced they really have the issue worked out.

  • last year

I do want to say, to be fair, the windows themselves are quite nice. Are they worth the money, not sure because there are so many different companies out there that want top dollar for what their windows compared to others do. We have the smart glass on every window including our now enclosed porch which faces east and plenty of sun in the morning, and these are large windows and whatever that sorcery is it,definitely keeps out the heat and I mean noticeably. So I’m hopeful they will just give me what the fix was and I can start enjoying our ,well almost new windows. One more thing, when these windows are shut you hear nothing outside. So I’m not completely disappointed with Andersen, just the repeated flaws.

  • PRO

They get a premium for their product, so you should get premium service as well.

    I agree 100%, it’s really too bad.

We chose Renewal by Andersen (RBA) to replace our windows based on a thorough sales presentation( do not want to specify the name of the sales person_. While she initially assured us that all aspects—including a non-standard window—would be handled seamlessly, follow-through was lacking. Despite repeated outreach, coordination with the glass company was delayed, and when a quote finally arrived, it was unclear and unsupported by details. The issue remained unresolved and we had to find another vendor to take care of this one window.

    Installation Phase
The installation team did a good job preserving our exterior stucco, and the installations wrapped up on March 5th. However, interior damage was left unaddressed despite assurances. We were also promised a quality assurance check by someone outside the install crew. all in all a disappointing experience, certainly not worth the money

It's surprising that after more than 100 years in business, a company like Renewal by Andersen still delivers such inconsistent experiences -- about half of customers seem satisfied, while the other half walk away disappointed. You would think that with time and scale, prices would become more reasonable or competitive, not more inflated. Instead, the costs are sky-high, and customers are often misled about financing options. It feels like everyone in the process -- from corporate executives to local installers -- is focused on profit rather than responsibility or honesty. That lack of accountability is what damages trust the most.

Man....the spammers are out in full force. They go so far as to even post up a profile picture now. Very official feeling indeed. Little creepy that you are using a ripped off picture of some kids that aren't yours.

    What say you @Crystal Corson

@Ajury Munomendy the process you describe is the same process for nearly every replacement contractor. Tearing out siding is the exception and definitely not the norm.

If the composite product is that much more durable, why only a 10/20 year warranty on the product?

  • last month

@Winston Shops - so will you pick on me also because I said I liked @Crystal Corson's comment?

I have made the exact same comments about the RBA windows we installed in 2022 many times in these forums. Am I a spammer? Nope.

We had a fabulous experience with them for 21 windows and would use them again in a hearbeat. Expensive? Heck yes. Worth it? Heck yes in the eye of this beholder.

  • last month

    @Kate Cowers

Where did I "pick" on you? I made fun of @Crystal Corson comment because it's "her" first comment and only comment.

"He or she" (more likely a he and probably in Indonesia) is spamming for RBA. Unless of course folks think that someone was so blown away by the process that they had to register, post a fake profile picture, and post a glowing comment the same day they registered.

I guess, indirectly, I am making fun of anyone that believe that drivel, but I didn't even know that you "Liked" their comment. My post was directed at that spammer, not you. I guess you could infer an insult at the fact that anyone that thinks @Crystal Corson is a real person is a rube, but it wasn't directed at you specifically.

That's great that you liked their project. Seeing as you are an "actual" client, why not post up for the future readers of the forum what you got and what one might expect to pay for their services? I mean, those are the real facts that folks want to know about.

Please share your project details. It will only help the future purchasers of their products that are in the market.

As for me, I got them to quote my 15 wood window replacements with RBA replacements, inserts and not full re-trims, and they were about $45K at initial lead out price and magically "found" some discounts to save me about 7K to make it a more palatable $38K for the 15, medium sized double hungs.
