Such a nice video and what a good son! I'm finding myself drawn to weird-colored roses lately (though I don't grow many of them -- yet), so the 'Black Tea' caught my eye and I see on HMF that Burling grows it -- noted for future reference.

I am also a big fan of chrysanthemums, especially the spider-flowered ones, and really enjoy their evocative scent, too. More than twenty years ago or so, Thomson and Morgan -- once and never again -- offered seeds for mixed colors of spider 'mums from Japan, from which I grew a lavender one and a couple of yellows, which I still have. It soon became obvious, though, why they wouldn't be popular with your average gardener: as in your son's video, the plants of this kind don't tend to form tidy mounds but are long, spindly things (up to 8' tall!) that must be pinched and staked religiously to grow the stems long and straight. Some years I succeed somewhat at that, but mostly not, as you can see from these photos I took yesterday of my favorite, the lavender one, which is the worst of the lot that way. Even so, they make wonderful cut flowers for the house, lasting way over a week in a vase, and I have them in practically every room right now.

Wow! That's amazing, catspa! Thanks for sharing. I actually really love those spider mums above all others. A long time ago when I lived in Philadelphia I used to sometimes go to Longwood Gardens' annual fall greenhouse display of all kinds of show Chrysanthemums, many of them hanging from great heights. There was also the nearby Winterthur mansion, in Delware, a museum of antique furniture amassed by the Duponts, which had displays of cut chrysanthemums, often spider ones, lighting up every room.

As for my health, I am becoming very old and garrulous, but otherwise, my prognosis fortunately is quite good the doctors tell me, though I have treatments ahead in in month of December.
