Clay balls in potting mix?

Anyone here with experience using the clay balls as a base for potting mix? I typically use a 5-1-1 mix but I'm always looking for something to replace the pine bark because I struggle to find a good source for that. Usually what I buy is a good size but is not composted and has a fair amount of wood in it. Most of the reading I've done mentions the clay balls in hydroponics systems, but they seem like they could also function as the bark does in 5-1-1 (some water holding capacity but mostly structural support).
I live in Phoenix and mostly try to grow citrus.
Thanks!
