Cabinet - Paint Stain Replace

last modified: 4 years ago

New build home and already I need to make a major change. The cabinets clash with the floors. The floors are tile color/pattern Smoke. The cabinets are Timberlake Portfolio Select New Haven Maple Spice. I can have them 1) painted 2) stained or 3) replace doors & drawers. I also need help selecting a new color. White? Gray? In case of replacement, Timberlake has Maple Slate and Painted Stone for lighter gray and Painted Boulder for a darker gray and a Painted Linen. Our counters are Colonial White, you’ll have to see photo to see there is nothing white about them. Backsplash is Dal-Tile Amity Glass Grey. I’m willing to change backsplash, too. Appliances are stainless.

Do you have the option of redoing the floor entirely? The cabinets are pretty; the floor is the problem.

can’t redo the floor; it it’s whole house (other than the bedrooms)

    thanks

I would tend towards the lighter door but youll need to get samples and see them against your floor. i would replace doors/drawers.

    sorry! beautiful floor.

I agree with missb_remodeling. Replace the doors/drawers after looking at the 3 samples of doors next to your floor. I love your countertop and backsplash choices with the floor.

Are these you cabinets in your kitchen? They look brand new. If you are going to replace doors and drawers to a new color, then you will also need the materials to finish the sides and figure out how to finish the side edge of the cabinet faceframe and order new toe kicks and moldings. That is not going to be an inexpensive endeavor.

You would be better off painting them, if you choose to go that route. I have never had cabinets that were painted in the field so I cannot speak to the longevity of that option.

On my monitor, the cabinets look fine with the tile ; I even think the countertop would work - not sure about the splash. I would want the walls painted a rich color to bring it all together - anything but white or light gray.

    Good luck!

Debbi, yes these are brand new cabinets in my new build house. still under construction. I know it it’s going to be expensive to replace because it’s just not the doors and drawers, it’s all the little details. Appreciate your comments, very helpful.

Not sure you aren't just nervous about your selections. Could you get a sample of the counter next to the cabinet and floor? Would you use a different backsplash?

This is hard to do with monitors but I like the last door color the best. It seems to pull the countertop and floor together without making the room too dark. The backsplash should be chosen after these are all done and your lighting is installed.

Sorry you have to redo a new build but if you’re unhappy, getting it changed now is a good idea. And yes, changing the doors and refacing mean the stiles, rails and sides need to be veneered too.

I've come back to this about three times now. I like your cabinets very much and hate to think you might consider having them painted. I'm not convinced they don't work with your floor if the other elements are OK. Would like to see you counter material against both the wood and the floor. Are you sure it's just not the emptiness of the rest of the space making it look like its not working together? Your backsplash might have to be reconsidered, but that would probably be the least expensive change to make.

sofia's got the backsplash you need above. then some hammered iron or pewter hardware[ maybe black] and a runner or two w various earth tones. and you'll be fine.
