In a condo that had popcorn ceilings, the carpenters installed furring strips, ran the wiring, added 1/4" drywall over the furring strips that allowed the very slimmest downlights to be installed.

This is a Cliff May house and it appears that all the lighting is surface mounted and the supply is covered by additional wood on the ceiling.

I agree with RL Relocation LLC that you need to ask an electrician, as well as a carpenter (or roofer) since somebody will be cutting into your roof or ceiling to do this.

Here's one big red flag I see: I have ceilings just like yours. the wires are "trapped" between the wood and the insulation-- once installed, you can't pull them through. the product you posted has very specific wiring for specific LEDs that could break down one day. What are you going to do if that happens? What if that model is discontinued and you can't buy replacements? Or even if you can, how are you going to dig into the ceiling to hook the new ones up again? your wires will be "locked" into the ceiling and a huge pain to replace. You might be better off choosing traditional wiring that you can wire any light to in the future. Then get really small flush lights like these:

^^ This is my ceiling. When that LED light dies, I can rip it out and replace it with literally any kind of hard-wired light I want.

alternate idea: cut fewer holes and do track lights. there are so many styles, and they're so versatile. they look terrific with wood ceilings. these days there are LED versions that are super tiny if you need them to be less noticeable.

also, consider plug-in pendant lights for some areas. we chose to not have any new wiring added to our house, but needed a couple of new lights. so we have pendants plugged into walls here and there. we were lucky that some of our outlets are controlled by switches. but even if you didn't have that, you can get an automated system like HUE to control with an app and/or wireless wall switch. (we use HUE and love it.) the pendant above our dining room table has a swag so we can move it over if necessary.

also note the paper floor lamp in the corner. with those two lamps combined, this corner of the room is very nicely lit.

We also installed a globe pendant at the other end of the living room-- seen below off to the left. I ran the wire across the top of the beam so you can't see it. I had to learn how to get really good at concealing wires in this house!

the rest of this house also has many floor lamps, table lamps, etc.

also: wall sconces. it's so much easier to deal with wiring in a wall than it is in a ceiling like ours. (ignore the dated track light, I haven't changed that yet). small sconces also make great task lighting. our kitchen does not have upper cabinets so a sconce provides some much needed lighting at the sink.

@User Wow. Beautiful home, thank you for sharing! These are great ideas on lighting too. My husband and I just bought an Eichler from the original owner and we're planning, plotting and researching like mad.

I looked at the specifications, and the lights at Lowe's that Beverly is referencing require a 3" gap above them in order to place the "box". So if you are looking to wire and light the space between the beams of your mid-century home, Eichler-like home, these would greatly minimize the visual, substantiality of your beams. In our home, the beams are about 8", so placing 3" deep furring strips and then drywall would reduce our beams to about half. I guess it's back to track lighting... :-|

Those have a can not sure what you think they show. If you have the elctrical run there you can do some surface mount lights bit they sill need a box to pass code in NA. I agree maybe LED track could use less boxes. Have you look into cable lighting that might be the perfect choice since the electric comes from the wall not the ceiling if done right I hvae done it in condos where they have concrete ceilings it is light enough to use small screws into the concrete .It would I think suit the house

Yes, I am seeing several people mentioning the cable track lights. It looks like they would tie into an existing junction box in the ceiling, so I would have to forego the light that is there currently. While a potential solution, I don't love the business of 2 cables... I know, I'm just whining now.

What about these? These look really cool and clearly are getting power through the wall. Anyone have any experience with something like this?
