Paint Color for Dated Kitchen

last modified: 4 years ago

Hi Everyone! Like many in the forum, I would like to freshen up our kitchen and entryway with new paint. Our home is colonial style with a center staircase with the eat in kitchen facing south west . The current wall color is BM Lily pad (480) which is in the kitchen and adjoining hallway and stairway. The adjoining livingroom and dining room are BM Barely Beige. All other hard surfaces will remain for now.

The current green looks ok, but I am tired of it. I would like a warm feel to the space and am struggling to find a color for the cabinet color and dark back splash that also works in the hallway. I am open to most colors neutrals, blues or sage greens in BM. The curtains in the pic below are my seasonal curtains that i hang Christmas garland on. Those will change! Any suggestions?

Were you looking for a color or a white? I like creamy whites but I am thinking it may wash out your cabinets. Your backsplash limits color choices but look at light warm green/grey colors.

The easiest way is to get samples and look at the colors throughout the day.

Hi Sherry, Thanks so much for your reply. I had thought about a creamy white, but had the same concern We recently painted my dad’s place in white dove and it looks great.. My kitchen gets a lot of light mid-day so it looked too washed out. i have a sample of edgecomb gray that i will try. ill also looks in the green/gray direction Thanks again

I like edgecomb grey, take a look at gray cashmere or pearl gray, they fall more to green than greige.

The issue isn’t the wall paint. It’s the frilly light reducing valance, and the light removing backsplash. And the general overall poor lighting. Take down the valance. Change the backsplash to something lighter. Add under cabinrt lighting. Add a different pendant over the table. Add recessed lights. Then reevaluate.

Lighting is the real need here. And you need good lighting in order to even judge colors.

i don't have a color suggestion since very difficult to do from a monitor.

i would go a shade or 2 darker than cabs, try to achieve a mono-chromatic look.

you have a lot going on -busy- on your counters/frig/walls and a lot of competing colors. stainless appiiances/ light pinkish cabs/ yellowish floors/ dark brown B/S, green walls/black in the appliances/wood table etc... all this equals visual overload.

your eyes have nowhere to rest. so tame down the walls with a the same shade as your cabs and it will feel more cohesive, clear up the counters to only keep essentials, remove all the photos, papers from frig etc... less is more here.

@User @sprtphntc7a The OP asked about wall color not their taste in finishes or a kitchen gut.

@User and @sprtphntc7a Thank you for your feedback. i agree thaf there is a lot to improve. We are trying to work with what we have. The curtains are an easy fix and we are also replacing the kitchen table i appreciate your perspective as it gives me more to consider

(not a pro) Try BM Pale Oak and Baby Fawn for a couple more pale, warm greige options. Paint big sample boards and live with them for awhile so you can check the colors in different lighting / times of day. Also check your light bulbs; many here recommend 4000K.

I agree with the suggestion to remove the valances, and maybe even the blinds (put them all the way up and see what you think.) Some long drapes in the table area, stacked on either side of the window, might look nice and elegant. You might also want to update the light over your table. I have been happy with the selection, price and quality at West Elm, but everyone's taste is different and those might be too contemporary for your space. Maybe something with a nice drum shade? (Bad mockup, but it gives an example. The drapes should touch the floor.)

your comment was rude and not at all on point. try reading all the through the responses before you post yours.

neither one of ussuggested a kitchen gut and my answer did focus on the wall color and perhaps the reasons why she does not 'like' the color anymore. Fresh eyes 'see' things that owners sometimes cannot.

As always, the OP can take or leave any advice given.
