Stowaway stool in kitchen

Our kitchen designer mis-measured and we have a 2-3" gap between cabinets. We can add a filler, but I would like to leave it open to stow a folding step stool. It is not wide enough for a proper cabinet (i.e. hinge and door) and I don't like the Step180 because I need it to move around. I just want to leave the gap. My installer said it would look weird, but he might just not like anything that isn't standard. Has anyone ever tried something similar?

A removable piece with a magnetic spring catch at the top would suffice. An undermount drawer slide mounted on the floor could work but would have to be figured out before installation. The picture shows a removable panel between my cabinet and the side wall underneath a countertop extension. The space isn't used now but may eventually house a sliding baby gate for blocking the basement stairs.
