They'd compost by spring in my cold, wet climate. In fact, if I grew them in the ground here, they'd be slush by spring. Maybe toss them in your freezer before composting. (I'm only sort of kidding.) Anyone else have experience with aloes?

I put mine on the lawn and chop them up with a garden spade to destroy the growth points and make them a smaller size. Works well.

Could you offer some as free by the curb?

@socks, Yes. You can have them if you wish. I am thinking of pulling them out in Jan or Feb. I'm in Reseda in Calif.

Hubby grew up in Pasadena and his mom would send him out the day before trash PU. The gardeners all threw the clippings from their gardens out on the street to put in the can. They had a beautiful succulent garden from this! ;)

Put it out on Nextdoor, freecycle or craigslist and I'm sure you'll get people wanting it!

I never use compost. I treat my succulents (aloe vera plants mostly) with a special mix of Sphagnum Peat Moss, Perlite, and Sand every time I transplant them. You can do this yourself, or purchase the mix direct. I use the LGMsoil.com brand when I am out of product.

I don't compost Aloe due to not having any outside in my area zone 6 but I compost almost everything. Some thing fleshy like Aloe leaves should cut up easily if put on your lawn and use your lawnmower to pick up in the bag on the mower. That's what I do with hedge clippings and a lot of other yard waist. Every thing goes in the compost pile and I end up with tons of rich dark humus soil.
