Climbers and laterals plus once bloomer question

Do most roses that send out long arms shoot laterals if their canes are pegged or tied horizontal? I'm still really new to roses, and back at my previous place I bought some Austin climbers, a few New Dawns, and Westerlands and trained them along my walls where they shot out lots of laterals.

Now I live in zone 10b with no freezing winters and I'm trying to figure out if any rose that gets big will grow laterals and more flowers if I train any long arms around pillars or obelisks? Or is it usually only if they're labeled "climbing rose" where they grow laterals? Some roses I'm interested in trying to train to get laterals:

-Bishop's Castle

-Young Lycidas

-Princess Alexandra of Kent

-James Gallway

Also wondering about once bloomers here....do they bloom more than once without winters? If I wanted to finally try something like Alchymist, will that bloom more than once if I hard prune it after each flush? No clue how it would work or if they need winter dormancy.

My Alchymist is still a once bloomer here in a warm climate. Some rugosas are repeat bloomers here more so than my previously cold climate with the longer Summer here.

Once bloomers do stay once bloomers generally.

Hi -- You're in 10B -- I am in Sunset Climate Zone 23

Sunset climate zones: California/Nevada

where winter chill is pretty much unknown.

I have grown 'Alchymist', so I can tell you that it really is NOT remontant, even in this mild climate.

We do, however get some summer bloom on the Banksiaes -- Particularly R. banksia lutea. And a scattering of late bloom on Fortuniana. But if you want bloom through the season, you should really stick to fully remontant roses.

Oh, and yes. Long canes pulled out on the horizontal will generally give you more blooming laterals.

I think Young Lycidas would look best, and bloom plenty, with its canes resting languidly on its neighbors, or even doing a little weaving around them. Diane

I grew Alchymist for a number of years in Santa Barbara, and it did not rebloom. Being a chemistry teacher, I had to have it, and it was a wonderful rose.

@Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR Thanks for the info on Alchymist Sheila. I've wanted to grow her for a while and it looks beautiful.

@jerijen Thanks for explaining Jeri! Seems I am Sunset Zone 24 when I looked at that map, so right next to you I think. Will try to experiment with pulling canes horizontal to see what will give me laterals. With something like Alchymist in this climate, does it just bloom once in Spring time and then grow a lot of veg until the next spring when it blooms again? Maybe it will get to giant in that case.

@Diane Brakefield Love your pictures Diane. That's YL? For some reason I thought he was more pink than cool tone purple, but now I want him even more :) Looks beautiful at your home.

@susan9santabarbara Thanks for the tip Susan. I want to give Alchymist a try in the Spring to see how it does. Looks beautiful with all of the color change.
