There are custom knife makers. Perhaps you could find one who will replace a handle for you.

I think the business about "balance" for knife handles is BS,

Have you seen knives that come as a set? They tell you that all the knives have well balanced handles. How can you have the same handle for blades of different size and weight and achieve balance?

I think that the most important thing about a knife handle is the way it feels in your hand. So if he likes the original, get someone to replicate the shape.

dc, speaking for my Wüsthof set, the handles are not all the same. I’d say the weight distribution is somewhat important to the feel. Personally I like some weight in my hand so I avoid knives without full tang. I do think the majority of that weight comes from the tang though, not the plastic or wood of the handle itself, so I wouldn’t be concerned with a new handle.

Nancyjane - Please let us know what you end up with. I’ve got three knives that I’d like ”rehandled”, not sentimental so I wouldn’t spend as much as I would in your case, but I’d fix rather than replace if cost effective.

Try and find a person with a CNC machine or a 3D printer, depending on if the material was wood or plastic. They could measure the size and weight of the handle and custom make something for you.

Paul, can you elaborate on this response? How would I find someone with a CNC machine and what is it? Same with a 3-D printer? I've seen 3-D printers here and there, but mostly as demos.

I am not Paul, but this is my understanding about CNC machine and 3-D printers:

CNC is a kind of robotic machine similar to a 3-d printer. A. CNC machine is typically equipped with a rotary cutter , it can carve intricate shapes based on a 3-D software, which is similar to Autocad software. A 3-D printer, instead of ink in an inkjet printer, it extrudes a very low viscocity substance to form a shape (in x,Y,Z 3-D) as controlled by a software similar to CNC,

CNC machining is primarily for making repetitive items, and a 3-D printer is great for single prototype making.

So worth it. I'm glad you found success. The handles on our wedding set are cracking but not sentimental. A very sentimental small chef's knife i picked up at a thrift store in college i ended up finding 2, brand new in their sleeves, on e-bay. 20 bucks. The company went out of business years ago.

If you have not shipped the knife yet, there is a shop just blocks from my house that is well known among chefs. You might want to talk to them. I have been taking my knives there for many years and I even took some CF people there a few years ago. They were for many years in downtown Chicago and just recently moved to my area, on the outskirts of Chicago.
