where are you.. big city name.. how cold did it get in the house ...

can we see the whole plant with proper lighting ... rather than the light shining into the camera ...

no plant holds its leave forever ... and the oldest are shed annually.. if this is the oldest leaf.. frond ... then it just might be shedding ...

and how long ago did the window deal happen ... this usually doesnt happen overnight ... and it hasnt been that cold for all that long ...

how do you water.. does that pot drain.. is it dry or soggy right now???

It's a Majesty Palm (Ravenea rivularis). Don't blame anyone in your household for its eventual demise. They are probably one of THE MOST commonly available and sold palms in North America because they grow fast from seed and are inexpensive. Unfortunately, they HATE being indoors, are prone to spider mites and scale, needs constant moisture and hates dry, central heating. I don't think there is any palm worse, honestly. And even if you ever did make it happy inside, it would soon be a huge size and unable to fit inside your size.

Coconuts are easier. Sorry I cannot be more optimistic. If you like palms, I can give you a list of a dozen other species more suitable.

Oh I would definitely take some suggestions for other palms!

The good news is that there are lots of palms that will do beautifully in the house. The bad news is that they may not be available in every big box store and/or they will be more expensive. The good news again, is that after the initial investment, these palms actually, LIVE, GROW and some may be propagated to produce more palms. Here is my short list.

Howea forsteriana (Kentia palm)

Chamaedorea (any species)

Rhapis excelsa (Lady Palm)

Hyophorbe (Spindel & Bottle palms)..., as long as there is decent light

Caryota mitis (Fishtail Palm)

Phoenix roebellini (Pygmy Date)

P.S., My local big box stores used to carry many, many more varieties of palms years ago, now, it's all freakin' Majesty Palms. And YES, I DO have a healthy Majesty Palm, I try to keep it in my heated, detached, loft garage as long as I can over the Winter as it will go into decline as soon as I move it into the house.
