Budget bathroom help

We moved into the new house a few months ago. We have already done so many updates and still currently doing major construction.

Due to all of the other renovations there’s not much left in the budget for this. I plan on replacing the flooring with luxury vinyl tile. It’s shown in a pic as the little sample pieces. It’s a marble with gray look. I bought a new all white countertop. We will replace the light fixtures. I plan on painting the vanity either a black or chocolate brown more to match the trim. Replacing the vanity hardware and faucet brushed nickel. Then paint the walls. Which I’m not sure of the paint color yet.

The problem I’m having is I want to replace the toilet with a new white one. However the current toilet matches with the tub. The tub has to stay the same. I was always under the impression the tub and toilet should match.

So can I get a new white toilet since they aren’t directly next to each other? Then cover the tub with a shower curtain that will blend everything together. Along with accessories that pull the gray around the room or just keep the toilet gray? Or have a white toilet then paint the walls a gray color similar to the tub?

My husband thinks it should stay gray to match the tub. I’m torn. Usually I’m pretty good with this but I think my brain is fried from the other renovations. Thank you. I appreciate any help.

Are you replacing the sink with a white one?

Hi, since you are replacing the toilet, rotate the new one against the other wall that the vanity is on. Will make more sense.

    Yes. it is all white

I hate how the toilet is sitting now. If we rotate it that means we will also have to have the plumbing changed. I’m mot sure of that cost. so it may have to stay there. I’m also not sure if we are changing the toilet. That’s one of the design problems. Keep the toilet gray or get a new white one. Then have to tie eveything together

Can’t see the whole space but consider painting baseboard white, vanity grey. New countertop will compliment white toilet. Change mirror.

We did a bathroom remodel at our previous house in the course of which we turned a toilet 95 degrees - similar to what you would be interested in doing if it weren't too expensive. As long as you don't have to move the drain, you just have to have the supply lines moved which isn't too bad. If you're having a plumber in anyway, ask them to look at it and give you a quote. I don't know why it was done that way in the first place - it makes me wonder if there was some reason that will cause a problem for you to move it. It sure looks odd the way it is now though.

I vote for a white toilet, regardless of how it's positioned.

You won't have to change the plumbing to rotate the toilet. It will still sit on the existing sewer pipe. The only thing you would have to change is the water line. Just buy a longer one.

Its a Tudor style house with wood trim /doors. I was trying to keep the baseboards and wood trim the same as the rest of the house. Although painting the vanity gray does help to tie it all together more if i get a new white toilet and keep the gray tub. Thank you eveyone. Keep any more ideas coming

Buy a gray toilet seat to match the gray toilet. It will look much better that a white one. There are many available, try a google search with the toilet brand, date, and model (look at the inside top of the tank). Even if a gray one costs $50 instead of $20 for a white one, it's a lot cheaper than replacing the tub/shower.

if you get a white toilet, it will look like the owners ran out of money mid-renovation and could not afford a new white tub/shower.

The toilet that’s there is currently gray to match the tub/shower. I really want a new white toilet but just like you said I don’t want it to look like its half renovated. I want it to look cohesive, clean and new. Which is why Im not a fan of the gray toilet but the tub has to stay that way. I’d love replace the tub with a new white one its just not feasable right now.

Our kids hate it. Its pretty much their bathroom and the main bathroom upstairs. the master bath is getting fully renovated. We have been living in constant constuction with all the work we have done. We just want it all to be done and overwith haha. At least some simple updates Im hoping would make a big improvement in there

Ok. But I made a major mistake when we were building our house. I wanted something and my GC told me it would “be expensive” to do. Silly me! I never asked, “ how expensive?” Until you ask a plumber how much is it going to cost to move the toilet, you don’t know. Find out. It might be more money than you want to spend or it might be in your budget. Frankly, if this is the kids’ bathroom, I wouldn’t change the floor or anything else. I would paint it a fresh, clean color, install some inexpensive towel bars so they each have their own, put up a cute shower curtain from Target. Then start saving money and redo the whole bathroom in a year or two. Paint, curtain, new fluffy towels-done.

    Weighing in, not a pro.
My main bath had a similar issue with a cream custom vanity, blush stone countertop, old ivory toilet, and scuffed/dull biscuit acrylic tub/shower combo. I went for it. Got a new white toilet and got a bath refinishing pro to come and spray finish the tub for about $600 in white. Result is a white traditional bathroom where the cream vanity stands alone--looks like I meant to do it that way. I offer you this solution since you are also on a budget.

How about getting the gray tub refinished in white.? The gray is very murky. Then get a white toilet.

i agree abiut finding out the cost of rotating the toilet. It will be so worth it.

Vanities are in very price range. We actually bought one on Wayfair. Check Lowes and HD.

I would wait on floor until ready to tackle tub. Like you picked the LPV as if tub would be grey forever. If tub goes white the world is your oyster lol

I also thought about getting it colored to white. The type of flooing is supposd to be the best for waterproofing. It was only available in a few color choices. That sample is the one that i liked the best anyway. I will get prices on changing the tub color and moving the toilet. My main goal was to make it fresh and new looking without having to do more renovations just simple things.

You can definitely do a white toilet. but i would not spend any money unless that toilet can be moved.

Get a new toilet and move it. I’m sure that water guzzling one uses at least 6 gallons. Here in parched California, ours are 1.8 gallons!!

Have you looked at All in one vanities? you can get one w/the top, the sink, and vanity for as little 500 (depends where you shop)

Try craigslist. sometimes you can find fabulous deals on everything.

Painting that wood one so that it lasts means sanding, priming, sanding again, and a good quality paint. Change out the hardware. If you have the time, great, but the style is still outdated.

Paint the baseboards! doesn't matter if the rest of the house has it. a bathroom is a seperate entity. paint them.

You can have the tub reglazed a bright white. about 400 bucks. It won't last forever, but it will last until you can completely redo the bathroom.

    get your new toilet.

The vanity, that could stay if you get that now.

somthing like this would be better suited for that bathroom rather than a marble look vinyl.

Are they ripping up that old vinyl? if so, see if you can move the toilet to a better position

(did you know that you can paint that vinyl flooring? You could do a cute stencil on it and save more money (because of the labor). the money you save could mean a new vanity.

Amazon has Bemis round toilet seats in silver gray for $17 (enameled wood) and $54 (soft close plastic). I'd go with inexpensive new vinyl floor tiles, new white shower curtain, and one towel bar per kid.

Edited to add: since you want to keep the stained dark brown trim that goes in the rest of the house, just leave the vanity in the similar dark brown alone. It will look fresh with the new countertop. Paint on vanities chips fast.

Have the tub refinished to white. It will make everyone happy, you can get a white toilet and have more options for this bathroom. Look for an all-in-one vanity as Beth suggested. Consider painting the floor for now. All of this is not terribly expensive and will get this room updated.

Either keep the toilet grey or change it to white.  Paint the vanity white, walls white, and install the flooring you have picked out.  Accessorize with grey, white and some natural elements.   Choose a shower curtain to compliment  your new space.

Before we put our house, in NY on the market, we had a company come in to refinish a blue tub in a bathroom our kids used. It was not a guest bath so I just let it go over the years as no one used it except our kids. It was upstairs in the hall near their bedrooms.

We had done so much work on the house over the years, we didn't want to spend a fortune on this bath. We had 4 other baths which were refinished over the years.

We bought a white toilet and had a company come in and refinish the blue tub. I was worried about it holding up but they offered a 10 yr warranty on the work. It cost $500.00 and looked like it was a white tub. I was so amazed.

Just do the tub and change out the toilet.

    Hello! Any updates?

Yes, we have done work on the bathroom and it looks completely different without the need to gut and start from scratch. I need to get the lights changed then I’ll post a picture.

the other thing, and maybe it's too late to even say it, is i'm concerned about the water line being on an outside wall for that toilet.

This is the after. We changed the toilet and turned it. There was a gap between the wall and toilet so I got that shelf. We put in the luxury vinyl tile, new lights, new hardware, new vanity countertop. Someone on here gave me the idea to paint the vanity the same color as the tub to tie that together, thats what I did.

It looks updated and saved a lot instead of a full gut.
