Need help with sealing gaps

we just bought this house about a year ago and amongst many other problems, we are having pest issues that i cant handle! my boyfriend works all the time so i am attempting it. i am trying to seal whatever entry point possible. i noticed the bathroom vents have decent sized gaps where the hole that was cut is to large. what can i seal that with? can i just use spackle or something similar? if not then any recomendations? same with the sockets, most have gaps around them plus they do not sit flush so gaps around the plates also. no clue where to begin for this. also, where the floors meet the door/

it has large gaps that are not very pretty. bad job whoever cut them i guess. any ideas or tips for those, other than redoing the floors, would be greatly appreciated. i have so many more questions about this crazy house but ill start with these. the house was built in 97 and from what ive heard, they built them quick so i guess they just did it sloppy.

I havent looked in a while, but for the vent, you used to be able to buy an vent cover with an oversized top piece that would cover something like that. You can also buy oversized outlet and switch plates to take care of the problem there. The floor is obviously not from the builder, it appears to be a very badly installed diy job. There is a saw, to cut those door jambs etc, so that the floor slides right under neath it. Right now, since you just want to do a repair that makes it look a bit better, go find some big stretch type caulk, and try to match the color of the floor, and just do a really good job of caulking. Good Luck to you. Try and get some enjoyment out of your house, too, despite the fact, it needs a bit of work.

    we are having pest issues

    What sort of pests?

go find some big stretch type caulk,

Big Stretch is the name of a good but more expensive caulk. You want to use Big Stretch, not just some big stretch type of caulk.

Pest as in roaches! more than ive ever had to deal with and i hate them!!! the day we signed i saw 2 1 was in the garage but one inside too and i freaked out. lol we did just go through a cat. 5 hurricane in august. pest control blames that for stirring them up but i dont care, i just want them gone! And they are finding some easy way in obviously!! yes whoever had this house did many diy projects thst are really bad!

Oh and i live south of new orleansNew Orleans.

There are so many ways for bugs to get in that sealing the gaps you see may do little to remedy the problem. I'm not trying to be unhelpful, but just providing a reality check.

That’s perfectly ok, i need a reality check! Lol tell me what I should do then!! I’m calling a different pest control company tomorrow cause we had 2 more tonight and they were not at all dead or dying like they should be. Oh and I also want to seal the gaps for the air that I can feel coming in from outside. Like the bathroom vent gaps and sockets and door weather stripping etc. not just pest. Hoping by sealing them it’ll help get rid of places they can enter also.

Will try boric acid also. Thanks for the tip. Whatever pest control sprayed with it isn’t working if I’m finding them alive. My house is clean I don’t leave dirty dishes etc so I am not sure what’s going on. I know we also have remanence of a few rotted tree stumps left in the yard from previous owner cutting down trees. Also saw 4 snakes over the summer so fearful they’ll find a way in also. 😬😬😬

Buy some of those roach motels. They are not expensive, and you can slide one under frig and stove, and other p laces, where kids or pets cant get at them. Much safer for your health, than having a bunch of spraying going on constantly. https://www.lowes.com/pd/BLACK-FLAG-Roach-Motel-2-Count-Roach-Bait-Station-2-Pack/50328413?cm_mmc=shp--c--prd--lwn--ggl--LIA_LWN_241_Chemicals--50328413--0--0-_-0&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=Cj0KCQiA-qGNBhD3ARIsAO_o7ylicNZ8BUztXJ7byPkqtBLZtNxusJ0zAvf3-iWmNTXCuDJUcPnbe4gaAujeEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds Buy these sticky trap type things for your garage. https://www.amazon.com/Stingmon-Cockroach-Roaches-Spiders-Crickets/dp/B08FZZSZS5/ref=asc_df_B08FZZSZS5/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=507834747797&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3704133158695405884&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9014701&hvtargid=pla-1225746451173&psc=1

I agree with Jane's and cat_ky's suggestions for simple, low cost remedies. And as someone who spent most of his career as an environmental engineer and regulator, what you don't want to do is get an extermination company to deal with this. I've seen such companies regularly spray worrisome quantities of potentially toxic chemicals inside and outside homes. It sounds like you are dealing with a possible phobia here: don't let your fears cause you to employ "solutions" that are far worse than the problem.

For sure it is turning into a phobia. Ive always hated the things but now It is constant fear of them. I mean it’s just not normal to spend that much money on a house and it be pest city!! I sleep with cotton in my ears now and can’t sit comfortably anywhere in the house lately. It’s not fun when I should be enjoying it. :(

Jane, you need to relax. Being so upset, wont help things. They are nasty ugly things to have, but, the bait will take care of it. Put some under the frig, and places pets cant get. Put sticky traps in the garage in areas, where no one can get into them. They wont hurt you, but, they are awful things.
