Scroll shutter dogs orientation question

We just put up shutters with functional hardware, and now I’m wondering if the dogs are correct, or if there is even a right or wrong way to install scroll style hold backs. The contractor’s guy put them up with the curl pointed toward the center of the window, and I think they would look better with the curl pointed toward the outside. Most of the photos I’ve seen have them installed with the curl pointed out, though I’ve seen them both ways. Here’s how they look now. I know they are going to think I’m nuts if I ask them to turn them around, lol.

Thanks, bpath. There’s room behind the shutters for air circulation so I’m not too worried about rot, but I’ll keep an eye on them. We just paid to have them installed. If it looks like they’re going to be a problem we’ll have them switched next time we repaint.

When we moved in 6 months ago some of these shutters were screwed to the house (I bought a few new ones recently) and probably had been there for 15 years at least, as the previous owner did exactly nothing to maintain the house.

First, they look great, and second, all the photos I’ve seen show the longer scroll end at the bottom, just like yours

Edit…hit submit by accident…and an equal number of scrolls facing in and facing out, so I think that’s just preference

Thanks. I’m already prepared for everyone who sees them to tell me I have them installed backwards because the slats are pointing up when they are open.

Joanne, my grandfather built his house with functioning shutters and the slats pointing down. His relatives came to visit from the old country and told him the shutters were upside down. So he switched them. Within a year he switched them back.

Most people in the US don't close their shutters, nor did Grandfather, so the rainwater ran down the back of the slats and started to mold and rot.

So, if you plan to use your shutters, you've installed them properly. If you don't plan to use them, flip them.
