Staircase wall - absolutely hate it :(

last modified: 4 years ago

I just don't like my staircase and the wall behind it. We will be hanging a chandelier but it won't show until you come really close to the stairs.

I am confused about the front and side staircase wall. I want to install mirrors so the chandelier can reflect but not sure what design would work best with this wall or maybe an accent wall made on this wall

What would you do?

You are building new, remodeling WHAT? if new, the wall you can't stand is on those plans with the stair............evident before now. You are at drywall stage either way. The wall will need art........: ) but not until you have paint. Chill for a bit, A chandelier doesn't need to reflect..........and you aren't the first with the issue. Give it a "view' ........later

Thank you Jan. We are remodelling it and I always hated this wall but can't do much about it.

What do you think of an accent wall?

How does this space relate to the rest of the house? BTW the feature wall you show is a mess a feature needs one focal point not ten

Good grief, It's not going anywhere if there is anything behind it. And it doubtful a window is possible, or built ins or anything else. Find some wonderful tall single and vertical art. It will be what it will be. A mirror ? Depends a wonderful thing to reflect.........Relax, for now.

You could do something simple like this to add interest without being too busy. Lots of examples of these types of treatments are out there for the Googling.

The wall itself doesn't need to be made interesting, a fixture and some art or wallpaper could be enough.

Amylynn’s sample looks great! Simple and classy.

(I don’t know why you hate it already. It’s not done. Stop staring at it. 😉 )

I actually did that .........she couldn't bear them anywhere else : ) Hubby ? Different story

I like the large wall trimmed with the boxes, but all those ledges seem like dust collectors.

No mirrors, just art and a chandelier.

Also, a drywall reveal or two is a nice tasteful way to break up the large expanse of flat wall.

    Thanks everyone for your response.

I agree a simpler accent wall might be a better option. This is a reno project so this wall had always bugged me or maybe I am not creative enough to figure out a way to make it more appealing to the eyes lol

I can't tear down the wall because there is a master bedroom behind this big wall.

Fabulous art, and it will be a fabulous wall

Depending on the budget you can really dress it up as others showed images with wainscotting adding lots of detail, etc or you don't have to go crazy and just break the look with a few shadow boxes, it's inexpensive and it adds a nice detail.

I have seen on this site beautiful stair halls that were painted a dark, dramatic color. Just bear in mind that whatever you do, that is a very tall ceiling, so it won't be easy to repaint. If you have any dust-collecting features on the wall, make sure you'll be able to get to them to keep them clean.

Tee, goodness! I can see why you hate it...that rickety staircase, all those spots on the walls and holes in the steps... Haha. I wondered, when I saw it, what your real reason for hating it was. Was it too vertical? Too dark? You like glam, so was it too boring? Anyway, I remembered the staircase towards the end of this video: https://youtu.be/Os02K3VP8-I
Would something like that deal with whatever you hate about your staircase? Dark glossy to light? Jan is a master of "glam", and would be a good source of ideas, especially for materials. Look at her profile.

There are endless possibilities and waiting until staircase is finished will help you narrow down a look that best suits it and your home in general. If contemporary, I would keep it pretty simple and make sure the chandelier pulls the look together, as it has a big influence. In summary, so much really depends on the style of the staircase.

I'm not quite understanding the problems with the walls of the stairwell. They need to be there to provide separation with other rooms and to provide support for the stair itself. A chandelier will provide light and also will be a decorative element but you are limited in where to place it. As others have suggested artwork will provide a lot of interest in the stairwell. Would suggest art in lieu of an accent wall for sure. You railing will also provide interest. So, I would be thoughtful in the selection. Good luck!

Rather than do the entire wall (floor to ceiling) with wainscoting (which can be somewhat overwhelming especially in such a narrow space), I would simply do partial wainscoting going up the entire stairway. You could add a sconce or two on the walls and some art and depending on your taste, maybe even do simple wallpaper above the wainscoting. And of course, an attractive railing will enhance the entire space. A beautiful stairway can actually turn out to be one of the most attractive places in your home!

And these last two are purely for fun….you can install wallpaper to match your pet, or create a space to scare the burglars away :)

Consider a 24" x 24" window in the bathroom wall common to the stair.

(which may or may not work depending upon the bathroom layout)

there are so many diff ways to decorate that wall. I like the wainscot idea.

or you could do a tongue and groove wood or white ship lap on the wall.

    mirror, art. whatever

I really like the black board and batten surround by white and a nice light.

Panel it all and design a railing and paint color which compliments it. It is all in the finish work that will make it a standout.

Thank you all for amazing ideas

I went with grid feature wall only the front and not the side walls because it would’ve been too much. As for paint i am paint all the walls same so it doesn’t look overwhelm

I noticed in your idea books a couple of pictures of stairwells with clear half walls. Will you be that in your stairwell?

Yeh this is the inspiration. I was planning on doing floating stair which goes to theatre room in the basement but it was costing me A LOT so i had to opt out of the option. I will be getting frameless glass stair railing with black railing and same brown wood that i am using in the bedrooms

Neat! I am looking forward to seeing it!

When I am going through hiccups I get excited too

I am looking for options for chandelier for this area but I don't have any luck so far. Please do recommend something. Some of my family likes shiny and bling bling lol and I like more modern and something catches the eye (lighting is not a big issue as I have tons of pot lights)

Hi Tee, you asked for stair chandelier ideas. And I think this is an opportunity to bring in a little bit of nature. You already have wood treads for nature, but everything else in your stairway is less so. The following pictures are from a HOUZZ, "modern, stairs, chandelier" search. They remind me of dandelion s, starbursts, dewdrops, flower buds, and I just like cut metal shades.
