i wouldnt expect much growth in winter .. which it basically is for most of us.. unless you are down under ...

it is not uncommon to lose a few leaves with any shock.. like moving it from sun to in the house ... etc .. but without the pix its hard to tell if its extreme ...

i think you have too many roots that arent in soil ... so you have watering issues ....

seeing the spots doesnt matter.. it need to be properly potted.. in good media .. and then you will watch it get much worse.. before it settles down and start to prosper again ...

cut the old pot off doing as little root damage as possible...

get a new larger pot so you dont have to cut too many roots ...

dampen some new media... repot it.. water it in to settle the media ... and then dont water it again until it needs water ... excess watering is not going to save stressed leaves that fall off ...

it wont be easy to cut that pot but with a razor blade.. and good scissors and a little elbow grease you ought to be able to get it off ...

if you cant do a big project right now.. put some media on those roots any which way ...so they dont dry out too much ... a bucket with a half inch of water.. and some paper over the roots will keep it damp enough to hold it over for a few days... if need be .. it its not an aquatic.. so no need to put them under water for too long ...

you have to do the potting now.. or it will only get more stressed ...

ps: whats the story on those roots.. as i am surprised in 6 hours of sun.. it could cope ..

This is one terrific species, I have both the plain green and the variegated. Here is my true story for how hardy these plants are. The green one I have is big, usually, I have overwintered it in my chilly but frost free garage in a location that saw little light. Every year, it would go outside until some time in late November. This year, I decided I wanted it in the house for no particular reason. Now the variegated one. It was in my work environment, in a colleague's office as part of a basket arrangement. The basket sat in an unobstructed, eastern exposure with a wall of windows from knee height to the ceiling. My office was closed down to in person work in March of 2020 due to COVID, and the basket arrangement was left behind in those crazy days. We were able to get back into the building in June of 2020. All the other plants in the arrangement would die, except for the variegated Schefflera. arboricola. This is what I think of every time I see this plant..., the will to survive despite all the odds!

P.S., Based on your picture, the pot looks like the plastic is relatively soft. I have used a regular pair of garden pruning shears to cut open those plastic pots, might be safer than razor blades.

So you all think that it's safe to repot even though it's stressed?
