Paint Over Primer

Hi. I'm preparing for a painting project- two large rooms and will prime the walls first using Kilz 2. i might not get to add paint for 3 months. How long does Kilz retain adhesion properties?

What's on the walls now? Why prime?

Why not prime and paint one room, then the other later.

@PPF. I paid to have wallpaper removed and the walls made paint-ready (primed). Thank goodness this is one of the last projects for this house. Either I'm too paricular, or they did a so-so job. While scanning the walls for areas that still need attention, I found the primer coat needs redone. White on white is tough, I get it. Using tinted primer, I will spot prime, patch and prime the full walls with tinted primer because . . . the paint is white. 😁

I work full time. and dont want to pressure myself. Daylight is currently limited to weekends and a few vacation days. One room is 14x22 with a 10 ft ceiling. i just dont want to pressure myself but do need to be ready for flooring by mid April.

Do you have any idea how long primer retains its adhesion properties?

Ask Kilz directly. They have a technical department.

I've been painting a long time and have never known of primer being referred to as having adhesion properties.

If you are concerned, repair a wall, prime and paint. When all walls are done, apply your 2nd coat of paint -- you are planning on 2 coats of paint.

@PPF. yes, two coats Always. I learned about adhesion 30 years ago by the gentleman who owned the local Benjamin Moore store.

@elunia I did and feel like I received a scripted response - before the walls get dirty or within 30 days. i guess Im doing one or two walls at a time.

@Lori A. Sawaya the crew that stripped the wallpaper did use Gardz. Thanks for reminding me of that. It was probably used before the wallpaper went up because it came off easily. How is Gardz as a base for paint?

Stellar. If they sealed in any (possible) residual adhesive with GARDZ, you should be good to go with top coats.

I had a room with very dark paint primed with Kilz. Couldn't get to painting the room (with BM paint) for at least a year and had no issues. Adhesion problems are more likely with poor quality paint.

Kilz is junk quality. Kilz 2 is the worst possible choice for a primer. Low quality, and waterborne, so adhesive residues will bleed through.

About ten years ago my professional painters covered chocolate brown walls with Kilz. A little over a year later I painted with a light color over those primed walls. They still look perfect, no bleed through or any other issues.

Kilz ten years ago is not equivalent to Kilz today.

Ten years in paint years is like 1000 human years.

@User I found that to be true when I used basic Kilz years ago.

    - knots bled through. Kilz has many different products, now, for different applications. Zinsser BIN shellac based primer is ideal when warranted.
