The other question is what sort of light does it cast? I feel like these sorts of fixtures need a lot of ambient light around them in order to avoid casting a bunch of odd shadows everywhere.

Yes. Thats the other issue with this light. fortunately I have great recessed lighting throughout the the kitchen that i dont even turn it on. what type of lighting would be a hoid choice for this area?

Doubt I would like it at night, lit. I would think I was seeing spots. Some people shop for the shadows a fixture will cast. I prefer not to add to the visual clutter especially at night, now that my eyes are older at weaker.

A dark metal could work well/connect both rooms and suggest something airy and light, so sightlines are not interrupted.
