I like the fireplace. However, maybe beefing it up so that it is wider would be a good idea if the tv is there. The TV is overpowering the fireplace.

I think the roman shades are a good idea.

+1. I quite like the room but I agree that something with a darker wood on the mantel would be a nice accent piece.

The fireplace is proportional to the room and the space between the windows. I think changing it might make your tv look better but will throw off too much else. I think you just need to live with the fact that you have a gigantic TV in a home that was not built for such things and it is what it is. If you were to raise the TV just a few inches so there is more negative space between it and the fireplace, it would help.

Also, who is watching TV in this room and from where. Are those chairs staying? It seems you'd have to crick your neck to see a screen that large from that close up. A smaller TV would solve a lot of problems but I get it isn't what you are going for.

I would get small, high end roller blinds that sit inside the windw. Your home has charming bones that the TV is fighting. By getting blinds that can nearly disappear when up and reveal the nice window trim when down, you will preserve some of the character of your home. I used these in my home living room and loved them.

You have a few options, build out the firplave to be something floor to ceiling (couple of samples below.  Roman shades could be nice but floor to ceiling curtains would look great!

The main seating area is across the room—it is an old duplex where front door opens in middle of the space. I don’t think I can do curtains because need to mount on the moulding due to old crumbly plaster walls.

Given it is one overall space assume the window coverings whatever they are should be same?

I am sure you have, but have you thought about moving things around and putting the art above the fireplace and tv over the buffet? Could that work?

Thx aktillery9. Fireplace is only spot for tv as art is opposite front door. The challenges of downsizing is just not having lot of placement options

Samsung now makes an ultra thin TV that is framed like a picture. it displays art, when not used as an TV. would be a great fit for you. see link Samsung Picture TV

We might suggest trying the roman shades as it seems that might work well. We also think you might consider moving the TV over the buffet, as suggest above. Notice the roman shades and the TV over console in the images below.
