Do not lighten the walls--there is very little colour in the room as is. Find some pillows and pull a colour from them for the window wall. Artwork or perhaps vertical graphics painted on one of the long walls would make you happier. If you add a rug the floor will be higher and the ottoman will cover most of it.

Yes, please take out the recliner and put the bookcase in its place. Also, attempt to replace the table with a medium or small coffee table. Everything else appears to be in order.

You don’t really say what you aren’t pleased with…is it the blandness of it all? Too dark? Too flat? I’d invest in lighting, you can’t just have overheads, you need wall and floor and table lights. I’d also sell the two end tables and buy something not so chunky and square, your sofa is all the chunky square that room can handle. Also if that too large ottoman has to stay, consider recovering it in like a kilim or similar hard wearing PATTERNED textile. I’d also go darker, not lighter, with the paint. You’re underground in a tv room, no amount of light paint is going to make it feel anything other than what it is, so embrace it.

This room is craving color, find some nice art for above the sectional then choose one or two colors from it to pickup throughout the room. Lamps would also help.

I see you have attempted to layer the room with textures, great start but I think you needed to layer COLOR also. The ottoman is different color/texture--you just went the wrong way--slip cover it with a richer color. Your pillows also show the way but the wrong colors again. Play up the patterns not wash them out. Get pillows where the colors for those classic patterns are still there! And then there's the empty walls. It's a basement family room go for a gallery wall of family/places you've been....if you start it well you can add to it for years to come.

Donald I feel it is too dull, I like a soft feel about the room but it needs personality.
Also needs a focal point . No place for the eye to rest.

I find monochromatic soothing, but agree that this this can be better. The entire top half of the room is empty and that accentuates the weighed down feel of the sectional. The solidity of the sectional is not enhanced by heavy end tables and the recliner, and the repetition of squares isn't helping. I'd replace the end tables and perhaps not have one at the window wall. In that corner maybe a floor lamp or very tall display or storage piece. For the other end table, consider something with a lighter feel, perhaps round, or glass and metal. There's texture going on but no reflective surfaces to break up a very matte feel (glass or mirror). It's all very flat. Some simple wood or painted shelves on the long wall would draw the eye up. Personally, I don't like to be reminded I'm in a basement and the window does that. I'd likely cover that wall with a long rod and drapery with a geometric pattern, even if it's nearly monochromatic. If you choose black accents or natural wood accents, repeat them at different areas and heights.

I bet your bunch would like "C" tables placed strategically at the sectional. They're large enough for a laptop or a plate of food and a drink. I like your clever re-use of the bookcase. Here's a flip I did with one here on Houzz. If you can find some baskets for yours it will be a good spot for remotes and other stuff.

I love your sectional. I think you need some texture and color. I would add a rug that has some color and throw pillows. I would also add a couple of lamps and turn down the overhead lighting. It makes the space feel colder when you have bright overhead lights IMO.

II would add art but take your time with that. If you see something that speaks to you then get it. Check out Etsy for art. Another idea is to take photo of landscapes, the outdoors or anything you find beautiful and then have it printed to the size you want and frame it.

I would add a basket or something to the ottoman to break up the sea of beige.

If you do decide to paint go with something moodier... darker.

Lamps, TV wall mounted, art, ottoman could be a contrasting color or pattern or leather (too much monotone) otherwise you’re off to a good start

Tealou, I wish I knew! I mixed it at home with who knows what paint colors. I have always tried to find that same color with zero luck!
